Hi,
My boyfriend and I are hoping to hire a car and drive round Scotland next month. We want to hire a small car for five days and really keep the costs down. Obviously we want a good deal, but we don't want to go with sharks who'll slap on extra charges when we get back, and claim that dubious things are wrong with the car. My boyfriend once hired a van and he says the trick is to get excess waivers. But I can't see a way of chosing that option on many sites.
What should I look for in a car hire company and are there any I should avoid? Any types of car I should avoid?
If it's any help, we will be hiring in Glasgow.

Don't use Cartrawler.
Despite my phoning them 3 times before I departed there was no car when I arrived at my destination. Not only was there no car but the agent they had appointed wasn't even open. I phoned the agents contact number but my calls were rejected. I managed to get another agent to phone him on his private number - the response was that he didn't have the type of car available.
I had to hire a car on the spot from Hertz at a greatly increased price.
When I returned home Cartrawler were not interested - refusing to answer any correspondence.
They're based in Ireland so I'm not sure where I stand legally with small claims etc0 -
I would never buy a car from them but I've always found Arnold Clark to be reasonable for rentals and they have a few Glasgow branches. https://www.arnoldclarkrental.co.uk
Check the cost of CDW and then check https://www.insurance4carhire.com, they charge £49 for a year's CDW.What goes around - comes around0 -
Thanks for that - Seperate insurance looks a great idea!0
