Write to the bank and tell them you are irrevocably split and want your name off the account.

Ask them to confirm they will freeze the account immediately.

They should do this (it's part of the ts + cs for jount accounts), and contact your ex for his agreement. Until he agrees the account should be frozen - meaning he cannot land you with any debt in the acount by making it overdrawn.

    This was done in 2008.

My problem is that because it is suspended not closed it still shows on my credit file and we are financially linked. This is now a big problem as he has been issued with a CCJ.

  • Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that answered my questions.

I have spoken to Natwest and the joint account is closed - I have checked and the account on my files but as "settled" (I missed this the first time!!) I have done some research and as the only joint finances we have is a mortgage but we have not lived together for over 6 months I can apply to be disassociated from him :T

If the joint mortgage account is open you cannot disassociate yourself but perhaps you mean an historic one terminated 6 months ago?

    From Experian:
Can I get my former partner's details removed from my report if we share a joint account?

Unfortunately not. As you have a current financial connection, the details relating to your partner remain on your report until all joint financial commitments have ended. You can, however, add a short explanatory statement to your report (explaining the details or circumstances around the connection). This is called a 'Notice of Correction'.
If the only financial connection you have is a joint mortgage, we can create a disassociation between you and your ex-partner, providing you no longer live together. :T

Equifax say something along the same lines too so it can be done.
