Home Insurance Renewal Question

I have been asked by my mum to look at renewing her house insurance. Her current provider, Aviva, is asking for £1100 annual premium. I went to Confused.com to get a quote. Having put in as many details as possible equivalent to the Aviva policy details I have had quotes returned for under £200 annual premium.

Am I missing something or is it just a racket on Avivas part asking £900 more for the same insurance?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated and I apologise if I have queried this in the wrong thread.

Renewals are usually more than "new customer" premiums.

Check you are comparing like with like, (esp excesses) and if happy go with it.

(Aviva also do cashback via the usual cashback sites (eg TCB currently £60.60 for buildings + contents)

I would expect renewal to be a little more than 'New Customer' premiums but surely £900 is excessive in the extremes. As for excess I have tried to be realistic setting them at £250.

They get what they can. If you have been on the comparison sites, then you will see large differences between the highest and lowest quotes for new business.

I have received my home and contents renewal from Direct Line, somewhat surprised at the level of the quote £1057,I called them to discuss the quote and advised them I was mot renewing.
I was then diverted to a chappie who claimed he would have a.look and get back to me regarding the quantum, very surprised when they reduced the premium by £330 without any haggling,

I got a similar response from them in 2011 but a year later I tried this approach again and it was less successful
  • Have there been any claims, and what is the period in which claims are relevant?

I had a claim for an escape of water 4 years 10 months ago and as Aviva have a disclosure period of "last 5 years" I had to disclose it and it bumped the premium up to £500. But for Direct Line their disclosure period for previous claims is "last 3 years" so I didn't need to disclose it and was quoted £240.

Maybe something like that explains the difference?
