Switching to scottish power - eon offering smart meter

Hi Guys
I've just started the process for switching to scottish power (thru the MSE tool!) however I had a letter thru the week before (which I only read after switching) that Eon (my existing supplier) can offer me a free smart meter, I called Eon and they said the smart bit of the meter would not work if I switch to someone else and it would revert to a normal meter.
Has anyone had one of these installed and is it still worth doing? monitoring the energy usage sounds really handy, also I spoke to Scottish Power who think it will work but the woman didnt sound too sure.
Thanks

The advice provided to you by both Eon and Scottish Power is correct. A smart meter can act as a normal one for any supplier that does not yet support smart metering.
One day we will all be on smart metering I am led to believe.
I would suggest you continue with your switch to the cheapest supplier0 -
Thanks for the reply, I'm just not sure if the smart bit of the meter will continue to work as Eon are saying it wont while scottish power say it probably will, when I say smart bit i mean automatic meter reads.
I still want to switch but if the smart bit will stop working I may decide not to bother with switching the meter.0 -
Scottish Power should be able to confirm whether or not they currently support smart metering
I don't think they do, generally. They had a 1000 meter trail in Ipswich last summer and recently started doing a 5000 meter trail in Scotland, but otherwise I do not think they are supported..
Eon are further ahead with their introduction with over 130,000 now installed across the UK.0 -
Hi I can confirm that if you get Eon to fit a smart meter it will revert to a 'dumb' meter if you switch to SP. As yet there is no agreed industry standard for Smart metering which means that everyone is using their own equipment and systems to run the smart meters. So if you switch, there's no compatibility. This will be resolved in the long term, but for the moment, you have the choice whether to switch or stay and get a smart meter.
Hope that helps

You can monitor your energy usage with any meter, you don't need a smart meter. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks David! wasnt expecting an answer from Scottish power themselves here so thats great, I'll just leave the current meter and move to scottish power in that case, can move to a smart meter once they become more standard.0
