Replacement Gas meter - Lost day

Morning all,

Long time lurker on the site and have a question which I thought I would benefit from post here in the utilities section.

I have had a couple of letters from meter plus (Im with npower as my gas/elect supplier too) stating that they would like to come and change my gas meter as its reaching end of life. The first appointment was made and I was given a day during the week between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Luckily for me I was able to work from home that day so I could be in for the engineer to carry out the work. The engineer never turned up and although i was a bit miffed I wasn't that bothered as my day wasn't disturbed at all really. A week back i received another letter from meter plus stating they wanted to come and change the meter and my appointment was again a weekday between 8am and 6pm. This time i got a confirmation text with the job number and everything so i thought "we're in business here". I didnt have anything to work on from home this time so I had to take the day off. I stayed in all day but the engineer never showed again!

I was told by a colleague the next day that its possible to log a claim for lost revenue. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Its really annoying that these companies don't even have the decency to let you know they cant make it.

Thanks.

Meter Plus (or whoever it is that wishes to change a meter) is, as far a acustomer is concerned, acting on behalf of their energy supplier.

Occassionally, appointments are not kept for whatever reason, and it is not always possible to advise the customer in advance. All suppliers I've ever used offer compensation where a claim for such a missed appointment is made (and upheld). If you were advised in advance of such appointment that it will no longer be kept, then I doubt any compensation would apply. (depending on notice provided)

You can usually request a 2 hour appointment slot on request, and most suppliers will offer as a matter of course a morning, afternoon, or sometimes evening appointment. That saves wasting a whole day waiting for someone who may not arrive.

Yes, you can claim about £25 for a missed appointment. I claimed twice last year (for two missed appointments on the same meter).
The same engineers also handle emergency calls, so those take priority over booked meter changes.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks for the replies both of you.

macman - how did you process your claims ? Did you get in touch with meter plus or your energy supplier ? I guess it just so happens my energy supplier owns meter plus too :)

Contact the company that made the appointment to change the meter in the first place. It will depend on your region.

  • Macman did ok out of them with the double, lets see if you get the treble up and get a £75 compo. watch out for them trying to say they knocked but got no reply, they should leave a card to say they ve been. Meter Plus ( I used to work for them ) are Npowers employees for both meter reading and meter exchange contracts

I have had the same experience with no-shows after arranging time off for the meter to be replaced - I made a written complaint to National Grid, who sent a cheque of £50 in compensation - a bit derisory as I lost a lot more than that for a day, but at least they accepted the onus had been on them to inform me, which no-one had bothered to do, and £50 was better than nothing.

They have trackers, so not hard to check
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    Hi jayzee01,

I'm sorry to hear that you've had a couple of failed appointments from Meter Plus.

Please could you send me your details to forumresponse@npower.com? I can get you a new appointment made and look to compensate you for these.

    Many thanks,

    Adam :)

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Don't forget that you get compensation for a missed appointment but a further payment if they don't automatically pay it to you within 10 days.
