meter reading seems wrong

I bought my house 21 months ago and it is a newbuild so meters were zero when they were transferred to my name. I took both meter readings tofay and the electdicity was 5383 but the gas was 1565208 I appreciate units between gas and electricity differ but last time I gave meter readings I dont recall there being that much of a difference. Also that seems an awful lot of gas to use in under 2 years for a brand new middle terraced house with insulation and a new boiler. Last month I had an email from british gas saying they were reducing my bill as i was in credit and i cashed in £300 just before christmas. I now darent phone up in case my bill quadruples or something. Does anyone know much about units and readings? im so confused.

As for the gas, have you included the red digits in your post? Also the meter will/should be a white metric meter

Somehow I think you have used 15652 for the gas or about 8944 units a year

my meter doesnt look like that. its in the ground under a brown cover. I will have another look tomorrow. so do i not include the red numbers in my reading? sorry im thick. i had my son read the meter the last couple of times.

Also unsure if its relevent. My house is 3 bed mid terrace 3rd bed is in loft. . the living room and kitchen are tiny the whole house is around 25 feet long so not a big place. The heating is set to 21.5 and comes on at 7am til 8.30 am and then 4pm until 8pm and agaon 9 til 10pm.

What is the previous reading taken by your son, do you have the same number of digits? Could turn your heating down to 20C, that is plenty warm enough for most people, just put a little more clothing on. And heat living areas more than areas you are in and out of, most people don't actually spend much time in the bedrooms so turn that down and use a better duvet/ electric underblanket with overnight setting (cost pennies to run).

Are you sure that the meters were at zero when you moved in? That isn't necessarily so even with a new build.
Assuming that your current reading is 15652 (ignore the units in red), a zero start reading 2 years ago would mean (assuming a metric meter, which you also need to confirm-it's marked on it as shown in the above pic) a 2 year usage of about 178,000kWh-that's over ten years average usage for a property with gas CH and DHW.
So, unless you think you are using 5 times the average, you need to go away and re-verify your opening and closing readings. If they are correct then something is very wrong.
It would help if you would give us your last reading (not what it was 2 years ago).

  • Yes,Macmans correct, there are a few new builds which will use reconditioned meters starting at any number. you have a semi-concealed meter box ,with a metric meter, only the first five numbers needed, ask the supplier for your start reading
