Italy Train Help

Hi all

I am currently looking at prices of trains from Naples to Rome. I am trying to find a quick way of getting there - we will be coming (I currently think) from Capri, having previously stayed in Sorrento, so thinking rather than getting a return from Sorrento to Capri, to go direct from Capri to Naples and then get the train to Rome.

My friend has previously been and said trains are cheap and that although they booked in advance she wished she hadn't. I have just been looking at prices for trains from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini and some trains are starting at 58 euros and then much higher.

Do people agree that trains do not need booking? And also whether there is a lower price limit e.g. is 58 euros the highest it could be or will it jump even more?

Sorry for such a long message, am getting a little stressed trying to figure out buses/trains for different places! Thank you for any help

Don't book online in advance, that price will be for a fast train (whatever they're called now that are more expensive than intercity trains). You need to get a regionale train, it's slower and stops more but will cost a fraction of the price. Just buy the ticket before you get on. Have a look at trenitalia's website, they have an English version. Train prices for these trains don't change as they're set by kilometre.

If you havent already check the Rail Europe website - its very helpful - btw There is a private train bookable locally from Naples to Sorrento in case you ned that at any point

You can book a super economy ticket in advance for 19 euros for the fast trains. As in Britain you need to book at the right time when the cheap tickets are released.

Thanks for all the replies. The reason I didn't want to book in advance is in case we get delayed and if all the other bits don't work out. Now I know why I usually do package holidays!! Have looked on the trenitalia website and that is where different prices are displayed. Think we will just have to wait and see and hope for the best

Go to trenitalia and search Napoli centrale to Roma termini for tomorrow. If you look too far in advance you might not get all trains (eg here trains can only be booked up to 90 days or something). There is a 2.30pm regionale train for €11.20. This will run every day and cannot be pre booked.

You don't need to hope for the best. Regionale trains will run at the same time every day, as will intercity for €23. This can be bought on the day too but I'd recommend booking a seat for this (no seat reservations on regionale). You can buy your ticket at the self service machines in stations the day before and get a seat reservation. All instructions in English. If you buy your ticket at the office just ask for a ticket for Roma for the regionale or with supplement for the intercity. Only get a really fast train if you can find a cheap advance ticket and specify the train you can travel on(like it works here). Italian trains are very cheap and easy if you're prepared to take the slower trains.
