re: Faulty BECO tumble dryer

on the 5th Feb 2010 I bought my son a tumble dryer from Comet Direct and it arrive 1 week later.
Early winter 2011 he found that it arched and flashed and blew the elctric so he has not used it since because he could not afford to get it fixed, [he is very ill with chrones and other problems so can't work].
He has only told me about it now because it was on the TV about BECO appliances catching fire, he did not want to worry me because I bought it as a gift for him.
The S/N is 09: 202784.09 so it was made in sept 09, the dates that BECO cover on their recall are newer than that, my question is were Beco appliances catching fire long before they say? remembering they are blamed for the bad fire in the block of flats in London 2010 when people lost their lives, who can I ask about them fixing it, I have rung the call centre but got no joy,
and if I have to pay for it for him what sort of figure am I looking at.
Thanking you Drinda

The BEKO tumble driers in the recall are may to October 2012 so your machine is not affected.
They won't entertain fixing it f.o.c, to be honest you'd be better off buying a new one as you can pick something up relatively cheap these days (that and they are more energy efficient, even in the past 3 years)0 -

I don't agree. BEKO have identified a number of tumble driers which are subject to recall.
However, if this one is apparently as dangerous as it sounds then they ought to investigate at the very least.0 -
They will offer to investigate it, but it won't be f.o.c
There is a 2-3 year span between the the OP's drier and those that are in the recall.
Otherwise any electrical fault can be placed on the doorstep of the manufacturer, no matter how caused.0 -

How are they going to charge to investigate?
I repeat - if the fault is due to an inherent lack of safety, they would be idiots to ignore it and are legally obliged to rectify.
One recall doesn't mean that all of the rest are ok does it?0 -

Nor does it mean that the rest are potentially faulty.
Maybe the faulty components have been traced to a particular manufacturer, one that was not supplying Beko at the time that the OP's appliance was made.0 -

No but according to the Sunday Times last week, BEKO's quality control and inaction when they knew of problems was pathetic.
Point is - this sort of fault really should not occur.0 -

I totally agree, but this still doesn't mean that Beko could or should be held liable for all faults that occur if these faults are on applicances manufactured years before the ones affected by the current recall.
If it turns out that earlier models are affected, then Beko should have to cover every penny in costs and compo, but at the moment there is nothing to suggest that this is the case.0 -

Another article in the Sunday Times yesterday stating that BEKO have not recalled all affected models and that thousands of potentially dangerous products remain with consumers. Very strong implication that they are burying their heads in the sand.0
