  • If you go to France regularly, you could be in trouble. French police have the power to take your car if you don't pay on the spot speeding fines. Are you willing to take the risk of having your car confiscated if you are stopped for any reason by the French police, and they say: "Hang on a minute Monsieur, you have some speeding fines you've not paid?"

Haw he haw, I read this in the hope the title was a saucy euphemism describing some motoring-based titillation. Oh well.

You wouldn't be laughing if you'd had experience of a speeding related accident though, would you?

I think you've misunderstood this section for the Brake propaganda forum.

Motorways are statistically the safety roads out there.

Accidents on motorways don't occur because "OMG SPEEDINGZZ!!!11", they are owing to poor observation, bad lane discipline and tailgating.

FWIW I've driven in Germany a number of times and cruised quite easily at 100mph+ on the Autobahns and only died a once or twice times.
French Autoroutes are very nice to drive on (compared to UK motorways) - smooth tarmac, decent quality and drivers for the most part have good lane discipline.

I'd rather drivers were speeding with good observation standard of car control than the typical useless !!!!er sitting in the middle lane at 60mph.

Anyway, back OT - OP, given that this is via rental car you'll be having to pay this. Out of interest, how fast were you going?

Why not read your Hertz Contract to see what it says about fine, if you can't find it, maybe it can be found online.

Why not phone Hertz France and ask them?

I would have thought that if Hertz Fr could put the fine onto your card the Gendarmes would have done that by now.

In our country, Hertz would have satisfied their obligations under the law by supplying your details, no fine could then be presented to Hertz UK. Perhaps it's largely similar in France.

How does that work, then? Hertz puts through a transaction with the cancelled card details, transaction is refused, Hertz contacts card issuer and shows them the contract?

Or does Hertz set up a Continuous Payment Authority? A CPA is the only form of transaction I'm aware of that can be successful even after the card is cancelled, but if you have better information I'm happy to be corrected...

I'm not entirely sure but that's the info I got back when I looked into it with my Australian ticket.

    Don't talk such utter twaddle.

"Exceeding the speed limit was reported as a factor in 5% of accidents, but these accidents involved 14% of fatalities."

I'll state that figure again: 14 per cent.

Notably, over 60% of fatal accidents had driver error or reaction listed as the cause.
