Hiya, what should I be looking for? I'm going for a year, but don't know what kind of policy to pay for or whether I need specific medical insurance? Can anyone help me?

Australia have a system called Medicare which is similar to the NHS but won't cover you as a temporary resident. but most Australians have private health cover as there is an increase in tax ( called medicare surcharge ) over a certain threshold if you don't have private medical insurance.
Most companies do medical insurance for temporary residents .. Have a look at bupa ( .com.au) , medibank and nib to start with.
If you go to google.com.au restrict it to Australian sites and type in health insurance for temporary residents you should get most of the providers come up plus the Australian government sites that explain the restrictions of access to Medicare and information on temporary resident insurance.
Some countries have recripricol arrangements that give you some limited access to medicare0
