Returning Bicycle after 5 months?

Hi all,

I bought a Mountain Bike for ~£250 online in September/October, but now I'm having some issues with it.

The pedal has become so stiff that it will flip over underfoot unless you put pressure onto it, and the brakes became very loud after 2 months of riding it, I today bled the brakes, aligned them fully but they still squeal. I have re-greased the pedal twice in order to try and solve the issue but it still is happening after a day of it being fixed.

I'm not best pleased this issues have occurred after such a short time owning the bicycle, I have spent money buying things to fix the issues but now I'm going to have to spend more money on new pedals and taking it to a shop to see what is wrong with the brakes.

Do I have the right to returning the bicycle after having it this long?

    Bikes need regular servicing.

After 5 months, you don't have a right to return it for a full refund.

However, if it's less than 6 months, then - unless the retailer can prove otherwise - it is assumed that the fault is inherent. The retailer must either:-
    1. Refund you, or
    2. Repair the fault, or
    3. Replace the bike.
You can ask for one of those options, but the retailer doesn't have to do what you want if it's too expensive for them.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Car brake pads often have a strip of metal in that squeals when the pad starts running low, could the bike have something similar?

The above post is spot on though, you can request a remedy but they can reject it if the cost is disproportionate to another remedy.. Effectively they choose a remedy

I know bikes need maintenance to them, but I've ridden it for a span of 3 months and it need a full service? I have been oiling the bicycle and etc but I don't somehow think bikes need a service after that long.

Nearly all reputable bike shops will do a free service an a bike at around three months. Things settle in and need adjusting etc. When you say you regreased the pedal, did you strip and clean the bearings and adjust the cones properly?

I bought it online from merlin cycles so I doubt there is a free service. Yes I stripped them, degreased everything and regressed everything, setup the cone so everything moved freely but not loose then tightened the locking nut onto it, so I assume I did everything right

The bike shop I got my daughters bike from did a full service after 6 weeks.

Years ago I bought a bike that needed putting together, never ever going to do that again!
