  • Cumbrian male,

The scottish power debt is all mine.. i was going through a rough time robbing peter to pay paul so on and so forth. As for being able to pay for it. I will.. I admit i have had my problems in the past but i would like to show that i can pay. Now this is the thing I will only owe £3000.. IF and Only IF the Alliance & Leicester say yes and i can get the money. But no doubt they will slap a special rule onto me or something. Now i was not aware of the CAB was able to help with the discharge of debts belonging to other people, Thanks for that i will look into it

Now as for cheap £9.50 holidays. sorry i dont do butlin or haven not after the experience i had when i was a wee nipper. As for Tesco i dont shop there.

Granted the caravan type holiday isn't for everyone.

Why pay interest on the energy debt when they will sort you a payment arrangement? You will just owe more money.

Have a shout on the holiday board, travelman sloppychops and saveapenny can find amazing deals. See this thread for what can be done.
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.

Banks sometimes have a rule that they can only do a loan if there is some kind of employment.

For example , from the Halifax website:

    "Finances classed as income

For loan application purposes, the following are accepted as income:

    Regular salary
    Employers pension
    State pension
    Regular commission
    Permanent overtime
    Incapacity benefit
    Severe disablement allowance
    Industrial injuries / disablement benefit
    War pensions
    Widow's pensions
    Working family tax credit
    Attendance allowance

The following benefits will not be accepted as income for loan application purposes:

    Maintenance payments
    Rental income
    Child benefit
    Council Tax benefit
    Guardian's allowance
    Foster carer allowance
    Income support"

But they have a rule that you cant have a loan if solely on benefits. other banks might be different

Can I pick up on a couple of points?

Is all the £2000 Scottish Power debt yours or are you saying it is partly to do with a previous tenant?

The other debts which aren't yours why are they hassling you? As long as you have no financial connection then get the CAB to write to them and tell them they are not yours and to cease the harassment.

I wouldn't advise borrowing to pay Scottish Power, try and agree to a repayment that covers current usage plus a bit towards the debt.

Also does your disability cause you to use extra energy? For example additional heating or electricity for laundry? If so you can claim for an increase in benefits to offset the additional usage. Make sure you are getting all your entitlements.

Lastly, as for a holiday look on the travel board, watch for The Sun £9.50 deals, or convert Tesco club card points to deal vouchers, or ask for advice on there from the regulars who will find you a break for less than £1000. You really don't want to incur further debt just to get away.

Could you explain this in a bit more depth please as i never heard of this. :A

As for my disability. I have multiple scerosis

Firstly, they cannot take your DLA into account as income to repay debts from. so this shouldn't be added to your income for a financial statement.
Why are you on DLA and not Incapacity Benefit/Income Support. You should be I think, then you could arrange for the DWP to take a small amount each week to repay them.
If all the above are not possible, write to Scottish Power explaining that you can't pay and can they help. They should send you a financial statement, which you should fill in with almost nothing left to pay them, you can then make them an offer of £1 per month. Go to the CAB and get help from them, mind you they will ask if you have other debts, and be scepticle if you have only one, usually people rarely have only the one, and if you have more let them help, then you might be able to have a wee holiday! Best of luck

It is a very difficult position to be in. I can empathise as my mum has multiple sclerosis aswell, she went to uni as a mature student, got her degree then got diagnosed and could no longer work.

I dont really know what to suggest as my mum recently needed money for a gastric band operation. Since being diagnosed she cannot stop gaining weight, due to lack of exercise (because of the MS) and lack of willpower (her own fault!) I felt so sorry for her as she could not get credit from anyone, in the end i got a loan for her and she now has part of her DLA paid into my acct to cover the loan. This is obviously not a very good solution but it is the only one we could come up with!

Hi, this has nothing to do with taking out a loan while seeking benefits, but would like a piece of advice if possible.

Last september i was working part time and took out a £1000 bank loan. Towards the end of november (27th) i was dismissed for gross misconduct (that's a very long story, it was for something i was instructed to do by my supervisor but i still got the punishment).

Anyway, since then i have been paying the monthly loan payments with my Jobseekers allowance. There is a thread somewhere on this forum about banks not being aloud to take monies that are yours by benefits but i've had no response there. I am just wondering if they are actually legally aloud to take loan payments from jobseekers allowance that goes directly into my bank account?

I am only asking this as the monthly payment is just short of £40 and i only receive £46 per week on JSA leaving me just 3 weeks benefits each month, which really isn't enough to live on.

    Thanks for any replies :)

I've heard the rumour about them not being able to take
repayments from your benefits but i believe (and i dont know for certain)
that's for benefits regarding dependents eg CSA / Child benefit.

The CAB would probably be able to tell you for certain, if you cant afford the
repayments then the CAB would also be able to help you come up with a
realistic plan and possibly deal with your creditors if you dont feel
    able.
