Is it safe to jail break my iPad? Will it still operate the same as it does now or will I damage it? What are the risks if any?

If you/or anyone else jail breaks it you run the risk of it being a paperweight. I wouldnt have have thought it will operate any different to how it does currently.0

I don't believe it's legal, but then not like they'd do anything. (my thoughts on it, not backed up with anything :P)
It's not 100% safe, it's possible to end up with the flat rectangular version of the "brick". This is whether you do it, or you get someone else to do it, there will always be a risk.
(I believe) Any restore/update with itunes will un jailbreak it, so no apple updates until the person who created the jailbreak software updates itself. You may find the jailbreak itself compromises the speed/ability of it, but this could be negligible.
Benefits are basically more apps, some better, some not so good, more tweaks can be done, access can be gained to the root level of the device (akin to rooting on android) and this can allow more customisation of the very basic level of the device, ie looks, sounds, feel.
Why do you want to jail break it? If there's a specific reason, you should know about it already, if it's a that could be nice to do this, chances are it may come up itself in a future official update. It will of course invalidate any warranty that you get with it (that may be current, but then you may be able to restore it and no one know?)
Otherwise I'd suggest let it be.0 -

Actually not strictly true, you cannot permanently brick an iOS device, there is always a way to force a restore (although this may take time and be beyond the simple process people are used to).
With a restore Apple cannot tell if you have jailbroken previously.
The only device I've managed to permanently brick is a Galaxy S2 with a custom rom which hit the eMCC bug.
There are reasons to jailbreak other than to pirate applications. It gives you android style freedom but with the iOS guidelines of behaviour still adhered to (unlike most android apps)

Once your ipad has been jailbroken, can you restore it back to normal? Ifso I cant see any harm in doing it.0

Yep, you restore it by connecting to iTunes, hitting the "Restore"button and waiting.0
