I hope to set up as a sole trader plastering and tiling but I am really sttuggling on a name.
I want a name that will stick in peoples memory without being silly or dtupid.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....thanks....dave

Wall Finishing Services (NorthWest)? ScouseDave Tilling?

Who are your customers? If it is word of mouth end clients, centre it on your name, if in the yellow pages, something starting with 'a' and sounding respectable, maybe

Can't give you any ideas - but here's a method that might help you think of your own -

Write down 3 names that reflect what your business actually does
Write down 3 names that reflect your business in a more abstract way
Write down 3 names that include your own name
Write down 3 names that make your business sound solid and traditional
Write down 3 names that make your business sound innovative and modern.

Avoid names that limit growth (eg 'one man and his van' will never get any bigger)
Check possible names to see if they're already in use - simply Google them and see what comes up. Also, make sure it's not going to be misspelled in e-mail addresses etc.

    Good luck.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...

Most plastering firms that I have come across who have decided to give themselves a name use something like AB Plastering, with the letters standing for their name or something that is easily identified. That seems to cater for long term growth and can still be used even if you are a one-man outfit.

BTW you actually do not need a name if you are a sole trader and if you decide to have a name for the firm you can use a name that other sole traders use as long as you are not trying to pass yourself off as them.

I feel that when it comes to building trade customers they want a company they can trust so put your name in the title and be proud of the work you do. If your works good your name will soon be put around.

Obviously (I hope) your name's not actually Scouse Dave, or even Dave Scouse.

    But it might be Dave.

So would DTP for you? You'd probably be Dave Surname, trading as DTP.

The only potential disadvantage is that while I quite like the sound of it (nicely alliterative), it's one which would be easy to mishear, over the phone and face to face if someone's hard of hearing.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • most tradespeople i use put their own names as their business either abbreviated or in full and it is reassuring to know that they are happy to put their own name against their work.
It also helps when i am trying to remember what they are called as i am good at remembering names but not business names as such for some reason....
  • if you do do this, then for what it's worth, i think Dave's Plastering and Tiling sounds better than Dave's Tiling and Plastering

Insert other name as appropriate ;)
