PC freezes at password screen.

Options
This is really weird (to me, that is, being a complete donkey when it comes to computer stuff!).

The problem is, if my Windows 7 PC is switched off, the next time I switch it on, it freezes at the password screen. The cursor blinks, but I can't input my password nor can I move my mouse. The only thing I can do do is power off and back on again, THEN it will either go to checkdisk or ask me if I want to start windows normally. Once this has been done, I can move my mouse and input my password!

I've taken to putting it to "sleep" rather than switching it off at night, but it still bugs me as to why this has started to happen. The only bit of software I've downloaded recently has been Spybot - search and destroy.

Any ideas/help will be greatly appreciated ! :o

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
First thing I'd be inclined to do is uninstall Spybot and see if the problem persists.
How do I add a signature?

    Uninstall Spybot.

Download the latest updates and see if that helps.
  • Same thing happened to Junior's netbook - it eventually locked her out completely.

I booted up using a Linux USB key and saved off all her stuff then restored to factory settings using the W7 recovery partition. No problems since.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

I've had similar in the past, due to using a USB mouse/keyboard. Work fine for ages, then all of a sudden stopped.

This was due to the BIOS being set to use PS/2 instead of USB, why it suddenly changed I can't understand.

    Setting it back cured it.
