SCS – Buyer beware. I wonder why the High street shops are suffering and closing.

I recent ordered a chair from SCS and I was told I would have to wait 7 to 8 weeks for delivery. After 10 days of sitting on the floor I decided to cancel the order and look for a chair I could sit on today.

They came back with we “SCS” have a no cancellation policy.

My point here is how do they get away with this?

I run an on-line business that sells products and I have to offer a full cancellation policy or I would not sell anything. I am told its law and this must be offered by businesses on-line.

I just wanted to point this out so others don’t end up in the same situation.

It’s clearly better to buy on-line with the guarantees and cancellation policies in place. Foolishly I went to the shop thinking I could have a chair today, if I have to wait anyway I could have save the petrol money.

From now on I will find the product and buy on-line.

Until the chair arrives I will continue to sit on the floor - smile.

Maybe this is why the High street shops are suffering and closing.

Because when buying in a face to face transaction in a shop, you normally have the opportunity to examine the type of goods that you are buying or ordering to ensure that they will be suitable for your needs.
When buying at a distance you don't get the chance to see the goods until they are delivered and you might then find that they are not suitable.

You don't have to allow cancellations for some items such as made to order or personalised goods, perishible items etc.

According to SCS, the majority of the items they sell are made to order, so even if you had ordered online, it is very unlikely that you would have been able to cancel your order.

"made to order" doesn't mean custom built

So what have SCS done wrong? You went to a store, they told you the time frame for delivery, you then signed a contract to order. A few days later you get buyers remorse? It's your problem OP not SCS's.
Lets see how you get on ordering made for you furniture from the internet.

There is no requirement for SCS to have a cancellation policy.

You could have said to them when you ordered it that you reserve the right to cancel it if they cannot deliver it by a speciied date. Unfortunately you would have had to write this clearly on the paperwork you signed accepting all of their other terms and conditions. Then you would at least have some grounds to dispute the delay, but I doubt that they would have taken your order on this basis.

I purchased a suite from SCS last year. I would never buy a paperclip from them in future. I do not blame them for poor quality control at G-Plan, but SCS's aftersales service is apalling and their inflexibility on delivery arrangements is shambolic considering the cost of the product. I also found it absurd (although legally correct) that when G-Plan's reputation was at stake, they still insisted on relying on the inept aftersales service of SCS.

In some instances, it can mean exactly that.
If I go into a furniture store and order a sofa that is supplied in only one type of fabric or finish then it's not custom built, but if I order the same model of sofa and choose a particular fabric and that sofa is made especially for me with that material, then why wouldn't that be custom built?

    The following are non-cancellable sales:
    • goods made to your personal requirements or specifications (e.g. specially made furniture)

In some cases, yes. But you implied that if something is "made to order", then it is automatically exempt from DSRs. That is not correct.

If you have no furniture then why order a product with a 7-8 week turnaround in the first place
