O2 broadband free for existing customers

I am with O2 and have been for about 4 years. I phoned them this morning to get my MAC code as I was planning to move to TalkTalk and O2 instantly offered me free broadband - absolutely no haggling involved and I didn't even ask them for a better deal. It is a new 12 month contract.

I think they are dealing with a huge volume of calls due to the announced Sky takeover and it is possibly more effective for them to just give their best offer (maybe not their best, perhaps I could have got more had I asked!).

I totally get that there are a lot of people who don't want to be with Sky, but the takeover hasn't actually happened yet so I am still getting my service from O2. Once the 12 months is up, I might well move elsewhere.

Some other info that might be of use as I know people are on various deals with O2. I only get my broadband from them and don't have an O2 mobile, so don't get any form of discount based on topping up my mobile phone etc

So, if you are an O2 customer and want to get free broadband even if you have no real plans to leave, just phone them and ask for your MAC code and you are likely to get a very good deal. It has saved me £183 for the year. The O2 phone number is: 0800 230 0202.

Do expect to wait for some time to get through though as they are clearly dealing with a huge volume of calls at the moment, so you might want to choose the time to call wisely. I phoned them about 8.30 this morning and had to wait 20 minutes to get through to someone. Their customer service opening hours are:

Monday to Friday 0800 - 2100
Saturday 0800 - 2000
Sunday 0800 - 1800

I hope you save some money!

I just got offered 12 months free BB and a £50 O2 mobile credit. Still took the MAC code as we want to move to BT Infinity.
  • That's a nice deal you were offered.

I forgot to mention that I have 14 days to cancel if I change my mind, so if I had taken the code, I could still have shopped about for a new deal.

I had already signed up to TalkTalk on Thursday but having spoken to their customer service a few times I lost confidence in them and wasn't certain it would be a smooth transition, so I have now cancelled that - and their customer service wasn't great when I did that either...

To get the free 12 months + £50 phone credit you cannot stay on a legacy package and must move to the allrounder.

    ****EDIT*****

After seeing #6 below I went back to them and they agreed to keep me on the original legacy package.

So look out for them trying it on!

Sneaky - all the more glad I kept pressing to just get the MAC. I'm on Premium just now (legacy package with no limits or bandwidth shaping).

Looking at what O2 have sent me by e-mail, I am still on the same package as I was previously. But I only get broadband from them.

    Thank you!

I went back to them and got put back on my original package (with the 12 months free + £50 phone credit).

Otherts should beware in case they try this on!

I've been with O2 for 5 years (legacy package) and they have been fantastic for me. Even had Openreach install a filtered faceplate free when I had problems with my line.

However as soon as I heard that Sky had bought out O2 Broadband I phoned up and got my MAC. They offered me the same deal as above but I turned it down.

May seem petty of me but I hate the thought that I, as a customer, can be sold to anyone. (P.S. I've nothing against Sky, I have their full TV package, I just don't want to be forced to have their broadband - I just seriously doubt Sky would have offered the service that O2 did if there was a problem as demonstrated noted above).

So I'm now deciding between Virgin cable and BT infinity despite the extra cost, and given what I've read I'm probably not alone.

It may turnout that Sky pay £200 million to give BT and Virgin a lot of new customers!

Why would anyone choose BT over Sky? It could be months before anything changes, I'm going to sit tight for now.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yes that does seem a very silly and irrational decision - you could have had a year free and then left after experiencing the new provider, if you then really wanted to.
