Wish I hadn't started messing now.....

Thanks for the help from this forum yesterday, all malware removed (I think).

Now there's a new problem! I hope it is not of my making when I was tinkering around....

If I try and start up Microsoft Word a message comes up that says "Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the office program by using Control Panel". If you then click on OK the programme shuts down.

I have been to Control Panel and clicked on Repair and it looked as though it was checking or fixing something but it did no good. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thank you.

  • Is there a trial version of any Microsoft package on the computer? That often causes a conflict.

You can mess around for days with stuff like this and never find the cause. Personally, I'd uninstall Office (and any trials) then reinstall.

    As above sounds good.

I really just posted to say I can't count the number of times I have thought "Wish I hadn't started messing now....." as in your title.

Remember that sometimes malware/viruses can cause hidden damage and some aspects of the PC never work properly after removal.... I've spent many hours cleaning crap from people's computers only to find key functions of Windows have been screwed up and unrepairable.

Nowadays I have a rule, if I can't remove a virus in about an hour, I reload the opertating system and start again. Using Acronis true image to make complete system backups makes light work of going back to when it worked/as new.

Just something to bear in mind if wierd problems persist.

Re: reinstalling. Not sure I have the disk anymore for MS Office. Can I get rid of it then re-install it online? It is easy to do?

Have you got a trial version on your machine?
If so get rid of it as advised above.
If you have not got the disk have you got the licence number? If not then you won't succeed by downloading something (unless you end up paying again). If it was already installed on your computer it might be stuck to it on a label but if you bought a disk it is often on that
  • First, use Belarc Advisor to get your serial number.

Then download the correct version of Office and reinstall (I'm assuming these links are still live - MS have moved on to the next (inferior) version and don't appear to be hosting 2010 downloads anymore).
