Faulty free item

Hi,

Just after a bit of advice. I bought an item from a well known DIY store. The item I purchased came with a free item (of similar value to the item purchased).

The free item has since become faulty. It was purchased on 8th Feb 2013. On returning the free item (without the paid for item) I was advised I needed to contact the manufacturer as I did not bring the paid for item and they could therefore not exchange/refund.

I do have the paid for item and it is unused. It is wrong to expect them to replace/refund the overall cost of the items if I return both even though its the free item which is faulty?

What can I expect them to do regarding the free item?

Thanks in advance.

Exchange the free item if possible or refund the whole purchase upon return of both items.
  • I would prefer the whole transaction refunded on return of both items. My concern is that the said I needed to go to the manufacturer (who is apparently based in texas) to get the free item exchanged.

I was wondering if I am entitled to a replacement or refund because the free item is faulty (and they cannot replace)

Yes you can get the whole lot refunded if they will not replace the item for you, take the whole package back.

When you say refund the overall cost, I assume you mean what you paid, not the value of both items added together? The latter would be silly.

They can reject your refund request and op to repair or replace instead. Although they don't seem to want to do that, in which case they would be within their rights to request both items returned for a refund if they came as a pair
