After cash ISA: S&S ISA or regular savings a/c?

Martin's 'fountain method' recommends paying into regular savings accounts as soon as you've used up your annual cash ISA allowance.
However, I'm wondering what the returns have been generally on Stocks and Shares ISAs in recent years. Are these tending to accrue more than you'd get with the banks, in view of the fact that the Stock Exchange has been doing quite nicely?

I've been very happy with mine - 29% increase last year but this year it's been a bit 'bouncier' due to the vagaries of the stock market.0

I have sold the biggest S&S Isa, I tend to think that we are in for a bumpy ride not only with the property market, but with the FTSE as well!
So for the time being im sticking with Cash ISAs, and high interest accounts!0
