Square foot size of room for bedroom tax

According to Glasgow city council you can only claim for what you actually live in up to the max entitlement so if I lived alone in a 1 bed I could claim this rate but as I don't live alone I can't claim the 1 room rate.
I can't afford to pay full rates for a 1 or 2 bed bungalow in the private sector but rents from GHA are much much cheaper.0 -

So you need to look into that. You should get one bedroomed rate (regardless of lodger!) although income from them would be taken into account or their contribution towards the rent.
Sorry, it's bad enough when people wrongly use the expression "shared room rate" - "shared bedroom rate" is even worse! There are people around who actually believe that you have to share a room.0 -
But 7' by 7' is quite a reasonable size for a single bedroom and certainly not just a boxroom.
A single bed would be just under 7' [200cm] by approx 3' so you wouldn't get much at the bottom. Perhaps that is where the window would be, or the bed would go under the window, depending on where the door was. A two door wardrobe would measure 2.5' foot width and maybe 1.75 foot depth, then the chest of drawers would measure approx 1.3' width and depth, so going along the one wall, would take up approx 4' of space [in one of our bedrooms, two chest of drawers takes up 5' of space, but you can buy smaller items. I've based the sizes here on Argos products]
If those were in the bedroom, you would have perhaps 2 and a bit feet of floor space. Not a lot but you could get those items in there and be able to walk in there.
We have had to replace the doors with concertina type doors because of the lack of space but that's not too bad. With the other doors, it was difficult having a double bed in the small room [and my girls like their double beds!] so concertina doors were a better option. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. I don't have a lodger, I have a joint tenant. We both have our own bed and bathrooms and share the kitchen/living room.0

My error using the wrong "word" I'm very tired. Didn't realise everyone was quite so pedandic.
I do know the difference well I hope I do! There is no such term as shared bedroom rate. I was hung up on bedroom tax!The most wasted day is one in which we have not laughed.0 -

I hope they give you a two bedroomed flat soon then I can see where you are coming from on this totally. It would be cheaper to take the cut on bedroom tax, than go into privated rented.
The fact that no matter how much people say the disabled are helped too much is, that no Social Housing has been build specifically for wheelchair users or very little anyway. Very few one bedroomed apart from the elderly sheltered housing etc.
Here where we live there are a lot of modern two bed in private sector built for BTL market (I use that advisedly) as the 2nd bedroom is tiny you can literally only get a bed in it but ok for a sleep-in paid carer. Ground floor ones are great and they have wide doors etc. Rent is about 475 a month. Obviously now even with two bedroom LHA rate it wouldn't cover it.The most wasted day is one in which we have not laughed.0 -
Well according to local gossip the houses being built for the commonwealth games athletes will be taken over by Glasgow housing association and Glasgow will suddenly have loads more 2 and 3 bed flats. They're being built in such a way that once the event is over transforming them will be easy.
Hopefully after the games there will be some re-jigging and then I can be moved.
I would move in with my other half but he bought a flat 1 floor up in a building without a lift before we started dating so although I visit sometimes I couldn't go live there.0 -

Before you started posting here we've had a couple of people who actually thought that they had to share a bedroom to be able to claim so I'm being clear for their benefit rather than being pedantic. It's never a good idea to mislead people.0 -
is it not down to the deeds of the property? If the deeds to my home says its a 3 bed property regardless of the room sizes would that not be the standard used for assesments?0
