Symantec email scanner suddenly taking forever

I've got a Windows XP system and my ISP is BTYahoo. I use their online protection. I installed a new Canon Pixma printer/scanner yesterday. This morning i can't send even very small attachments (600 KB jpg files) without the Symantec email scanner box jumping up and getting to about 14% of scan and no more. I then get a message telling me the message couldn't be sent (basically because it's taking so long!).
I've only tried to send jpg files which are currently 'open with' with Kodak EasyShare software.
Any help or advice much appreciated.
