CHECK YOUR BILL NOW
I joined EDF In July 2012; a Direct Debit was setup to cover the cost of Gas & Electric (£91), Today I check my bank account and they have taken £230 .... !!!!!!
I rang EDF and they said a load of Bull.... and I felt alot better. !!!!!!
Here is the Tech bit :
My DD was £91
My new DD is £230
My account after 6 months was underpaid by £105
a difference of £17 month
If I was Stupid this would look completely fine and I would not be writing this post. But I'm not. Those EDF Bods are at it again, they send a nice man to your door in Jan/Feb, when you have been consuming the most resources. Then whack you Bills up to the Max in the hope you have better things to do than question their judgement.
I have just got of the phone to a nice lady who told me they never look at your account until you ring them, a computer deals with the increase in your Direct Debit. !!!!!!
Also that because I have paperless billing on my account they send all correspondence to the registered e-mail addy. The only email I have had was 18 Jan tell me my latest bill was available to view online (Subject: Your latest bill from EDF Energy). I read the email, just a standard EDF template. Go to MyAccount now. Nothing about a change in my contract and increased DD. I read the email. I didn't login to my account, because there was nothing to say Immediate Attention or Change of Direct Debit.
My bank account has been overdrawn by £100 for five days and I have no chance of getting the money back from EDF.
They have adjusted the DD back to £91 the same as it always was because it is currently in credit by £215. Thanks a lot Bods. You just cost me £25 in bank charges.
Do I have any right to compensation ? They told me I was informed of the change in an email ( False). The PDF of the change was linked to MyAccount EDF. I would have to login then link to My Bill, load a PDF and scroll through 3 pages of numbers.
It was dated 18 Jan the increased DD went out 25 Feb. Not very long to add funds to my account. (Payed Monthly).
Thanks:mad:
A quick calculation shows they have used a factor 2.5 instead of .25
£91 x 2.5 = 227.5 (EDF) where do they get these programmers from?
£91 x .25 = 113.75 (ME)
Have a guess at what they should be using ? WTH

Are you suggesting there was no advance notice given regarding this revised amount?
If so, you would be fully protected by the DD guarantee0 -

What is the DD guarantee ? forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=4091479
They hid the change in a PDF linked to myAccount at EDF not my email addy.
The worst bit is that they changed the DD back straight away. It was only because I rang them... not them ringing or emailing me.
(Adding a PDF to myAccount is NOT correspondance. Neither is it advanced warning of a change in a DD)
Do I have any rights with my Bank or EDF ?:D
Found this: www bacs.co.uk/Bacs/Businesses/DirectDebit/Collecting/Pages/CustomersRights.aspx
What a load of (insert your rant)0 -
Of course the entire billing and DD adjustment is handled by the system. They've got nearly 5.5m customers. Do you really think that EDF employ thousands of CS agents to trawl manually through every customer's account whenever they get a meter reading? That would require 22m manual adjustments every year.
EDF's handling of DD adjustments is notorious on this board. Just do a search. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Yes if they change my DD , thanks.
Do I have any rights with my Bank or EDF ? Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme?0 -
No help, thanks.
Do I have any rights with my Bank or EDF ?
I assume you have now logged into your account and checked the bill they sent. This takes literally a couple of minutes.
Does it mention the DD increase ? If so, it is not 'hidden away', you simply failed to use 2 minutes of your time at any point over the last month since they sent you the email notification to check the bill they sent.
I assume with your attitude that it would have been too much hassle for you to open a paper bill "It came in an envelope, do they expect me to potentially get a paper cut ?"0 -

You signed up for online billing. For your benefit, I will let you know that online billing is where your bills are made available online.
The email they sent was a notification that your bill was available for you to read. It seems that you chose to deliberately ignore this, therefore any DD increase that wasn't challenged by you as soon as you got the bill with the notification on it is entirely your fault.0 -
Do I have any rights with my Bank or EDF ? Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme?
First things first. Under Direct Debit rules you are entitled to be notified of a change to your DD. If you inform your bank that the DD was changed with no notice (no proof needed because a negative cannot be proved) the bank *must* make an "immediate" refund. The cashiers terminal has a workflow to implement the refund. Just be firm that no notice was received.
Once that is sorted you can turn to Edf. Edf may (or may not) have provided compliant but "not obvious" notice but the real issue is whether the calculation is accurate. Given Edf's record on this I never take their calculation at face value. Ask them once and once only to explain the calculation arithmetically. If you are not 100% satisfied with the explanation raise a formal complaint, I recommend by email. Do not question the "hidden notice" because they will just say the notice was there (and you failed to see it). On that *I* will not be judgmental.
Live and learn. You will get better help here with a better "attitude". Up to you really.0 -
The direct debit guarantee applies where an amount is taken from your account for which you weren't given prior notice. You were advised of the changed direct debit, but chose not to check your statement (despite the email notifying you that you had a statement to view).
I recommend you switch back to paper billing, and look at your bills when they arrive.
I agree the jump in the DD is high, but could have been sorted before it was a problem, had you viewed your bill.0 -
I too am with EDF with online billing - The standard procedure is for D/Debit change notices to be printed on Page 1 of the Bills, giving the new amount and date it will be applied, which is usually the next month.
Whilst hold I no love for EDF, ( It seems every 6 months I have to contact them to stop an unjustified rise in D/D's ), putting D/D change notices on the front of the preceeding bill seems perfectly fair practice to me0 -
For all those who like to have a pop at the newbie , Thanks. Look at my Avatar, Bod.
I won't bother registering again, or posting what I think to be a genuine concern.
If you can't help, don't reply... I have loads of things going on Work, Flu , Autistic Child, Money being taken from my account. So maybe I have a bad attitude on here. I'm looking for a little help.
If you had money going out of your bank account, you wouldn't want answers such as the trash talk on here. It all my fault .. !!!!!!
I have an issue with EDF not this board. If you can direct me some actual help, please pipe up. It seems my own ability to click on some link allow EDF to charge £230 a month. Is that right.
There was a lovely comment from jalexa, thanks... more like this, please. I am learning all about Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme.
