Car Insurance: No claims bonus if you own 2 cars? - help!!

 I urgently need some advice...My other half is really upset because he has been told his no claims bonus is invalid and he has to pay another £300 for insurance because of it!!! I realise it is complicated so will try and put it as clearly as I can :o

He recently bought a car and stated he had 3 years NCB. he also clearly indicated he is the keeper and main driver of another car at the time of buying the policy.

He has been asked to supply proof of the NCB but doesn't have it. We shop around every time we renew and have changed insurer several times - the last insurer initially asked for it then said they would obtain this info from his previous insurer (I realise now this may not be true!). He phoned up the new insurer today to say he will send the paperwork asap, but perhaps foolishly he mentioned he had been insured on two different vehicles and now they are saying he can't possibly have a NCB if he is/has been insuring two cars simultaneously.

To complicate matters he has changed cars as well during the three years, so it is getting even more confusing to work out what to do

Unfortunately my other half is not at all clued up on how NCBs work (and I am the named driver on both polices but on a provisional licence, so am no use!) and I am not sure how/if we can sort this one out.

Oh and to top it all off I remember the paperwork said you could cancel within 14 days but pay a penalty, and I am not sure if the 14 days are up!! So that is a whole other issue!

Your NCB should have been stated on your renewal notice from your previous insurer.

What is true is that the same NCB can't be used on two different policies at the same time.

Eg I have two cars, on one of them I have 3 yrs NCB and on one I have 1 yrs NCB. They were both insured with Churchill last year, but they are with different insurers now.

So if he has 3 yrs on one car, and has just bought another, and is now going to have two policies, he starts at zero on the second car.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the explanation. Frankly whilst I understand the explanation I think the system is ridiculous, but that's not your fault! :D We are now trying to get out of the situation without too much hassle for us.

We searched for insurance through confused.com. It clearly asked if he was the main driver of another car. He answered yes. It asked how many years NCB he has. He said 2 (true).

We are planning to sell the other car, but were waiting to get this one first. (Since I have failed my driving text twice the other half has got an automatic as it will be 'easier' for me LOL) Now it is all a nightmare. We feel we have been missold the policy and are angry we are being asked to pay a £40 admin fee plus the days 'used'.

We are disputing the £40 on the basis that like bank charges just cos someone says they are going to hit you before they do doesnt mean they can! We are also however disputing that we owe anything at all, as since we answered honestly (or so we thought), they missold the policy and had we needed to claim it would have been null and void, therefore we got no 'service.

[We would settle for paying for the days of the policy 'used' if we have to but not the £40 on top!]

Are we right? Anyone know? Also tomorrow is the 14th day. Does 14 day cooling off apply to insurance? HELP!

14 day cooling off period = 14 days from the inception of the policy, rather the day you bought it, not 14 days from receiving the docs.
