Hermes courier lost my item, can I get more than the insurance?

Hermes delivered my parcel which was a return to one of my suppliers containing a pair of riding boots and a breastplate (for a horse to stop the saddle slipping!!) everything was put in one bag and taped up, the boots were recieved fine but the breastplate has disappeared. I have emailed the recipient and they confirmed the bag was in no way damaged and the boots were inside but no breastplate.
Rang Hermes they sent a claim form BUT I only had the free insurance £25, the breastplate is £70. As the parcel was delivered albeit missing an item, if they only offer £25 compensation which is no where near the value of the breastplate am i within my rights to fight it to get the £70 back?
I find it perplexing that they can loose an item from a sealed parcel!

Who instructed Hermes to return it? If it was you that organised it then why didnt you get appropriate insurance value for it?0

You might find it difficult to get anything, they will ask the recipient if the package was damaged, when they say no, they will not believe that the item was in there in the first place.
As for the value, you won't get more than the insured amount even if they do believe you, that is what extra insurance is for.0 -
Sounds very fishy to me... How is an item lost out of a sealed and I damaged package?
But no you will be compensated up to the value requested... You asked them to supply a service designed for items with a value of up to £25 and now seeking the benefits of a different service they offer.0 -
Not this again.
It's quite clear there's only £25 of cover, if you think you need more then pay for it. Common sense really.
I sent a £5000 Rolex via Hermes with standard cover, but it went missing. Can I have 5 grand back?0 -

Not exactly, if the merchant has ranged the courier and it is the merchant that has not gotten suitable insurance then there is potentially some action available against the merchant.
If the OP themselves instructed the courier then your right.0 -
If the merchant arranged the courier, the customers duty of care would end upon pick up. The merchant would have to do the chasing for the insurance claim, and in the mean time would have to refund the customer as if the item had arrivedInsideInsurance wrote: »Not exactly, if the merchant has ranged the courier and it is the merchant that has not gotten suitable insurance then there is potentially some action available against the merchant.

As per an earlier post I can't see the courier paying anything out here. Parcel sealed by sender, arrived sealed and sender claiming for a lost item...I fear this is going to be nigh on impossible to sort out.
Is there any possibility at all that recipient has made a mistake and unpacked part of it and not recorded the fact that there were two items in the same package?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
