Two questions, what are the best laptops sub £900. And where is the best place to buy it?
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=84822 £834.98
this looks good, but I'm not willing to buy from ebuyer.
this IBM also is impressive javascript:winpop('ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=17480&specialStatus=1')
but only intel extreme graphics.
Are dell recommended? I'm always hearing mixed reviews, but apparently their warranties are good and you have better aftersales assurance.
I'm very concerned about buying a laptop from certain websites because of the aftersales. whereas i wouldnt be concerned about something cheaper, with a laptop i want decent aftersales
I'm after a centrino laptop... i'm not too bothered about how much ram as you can upgrade it, im more concerned about the speed of it. preferably ddr2, but 400mhz speed ram at least.

I must warn you about Dell. Their after sales service is dreadful. I have an extended next day on-site guarantee but the two times that I've needed them, it has taken at least three weeks for them to honour the guarantee and send someone out. They expect the customer to investigate the problem and then get back to them and this goes on and on.
Although my guarantee has another six months to run, I got fed up with Dell and have bought myself a Fujitsu and I'm delighted.
A colleague had a Dell PC and when he had a problem they treated him in the same way, in fact worse. They kept him hanging on for so long that when he reported back to them on the latest result, they said ----sorry but you're out of guarantee, even though it was their fault.
Do keep away from them.
I hope this helps.

I'm surprised you've received such shoddy service from Dell. I've dealt with them frequently over the last 3 years, as my company purchases all computers from them and I have a Dell home PC. From my experience, they have always been very good with their after sales support, expecially if you have the next-day business service. In fact, one of the people I support (as I work in IT) ran into problems with her Dell laptop modem on holiday in Devon. Dell took the address from me and sent an engineer to her hotel the next day.
I think the quality of the support you receive may depend on the support centre your call is routed through to. I usually deal with the Dell centre, based in Ireland, who are superb. Please call me 'Kazza'.0 -
I was interested to read of your experiences Kazza.
I've had two technicians out to me---sent by Dell but not Dell employees----and they both said that they got lots of complaints about Dell' poor customer support.
I paid £221 or thereabouts for the next day on-site guarantee but they NEVER honoured that even though I threatened them with court action.
I ran away from them!0 -
Margaret - I don't blame you. I would do the same if I were treated like that. I know it's off topic, but one of the worst for customer support is HP/Compaq. They deliver absolutely diabolical customer support in my experience and that of my colleagues. It takes them 4 weeks to deliver a replacement part and then they deliver the wrong one! This happens all the time, so my company will be taking their business elsewhere. Please call me 'Kazza'.0
