You would need to speak to a local thatcher about your house and also it depends how much thatch is on the roof at the moment.
I used to live in a thatced place and the landlord had the thatch trimmed. I think that it gets done every few years and they patch up any thin bits, makes a hell of a mess and it gets every where!
The trim takes off all the dark looking ends and eventually, though I'm afraid I don't know how often you will need a full re-thatch
If you want any fancy straw chickens or anything else I'm sure that costs more... LOL.

For the insurance costs its how longs a piece of string, when you bought your house did it not say on the survey the rough re-build value?
also contents is the same it depends what you put in it that will depend on the level of insurance you will need. But most people under-estimate. the best thing to go is room by room and write everything down that you have got in the room and work out how much you paid for it. then add it all up and you have got your contents insurance.
It will probably be a bit higher than a normal quote because you have a thatched cottage but not 100% sure on that.0 -
I have just found this site on thatched properties which may be of some help to you
http://www.thatched-group.com/
EDITED to say that site above also have a specialist insurance company who would probably be much more helpful and probably cheaper than a normal insurer0
