Am on My third Letter on Poor Performance

Hi

I have been working with the same company for the past 7 years and in the last 8 months I have been put on the above as an on the last stage ,
I have gone through a rough patch in 2012 as loss of my mother and then my dad getting admitted in to hospital for various issues one been he suffered a mild Heart attack, then my wife had to under go an emergency operation and had to use some of my leave as have 1.5 year old son and also too unpaid leave which the company gave 6 months to pay it back with all this i found my self drained and only had 5-6 days of leave left and thus lost energy in work place.

My main question is I am trying hard to get back to square one but am not bale to sleep with this hanging over me and I am no Spring Chicken that can get other quick if it comes to the final straw ,
Can any ony advise what I shoul do say to my company

  • I don't know what to suggest really aside from maybe going to the doctor and getting some kind of letter explaining that you are suffering from exhaustion/depression/grief. It depends on how poor your performance is. By the sounds of it, your performance has been affected by what has gone on in your life recently, so they may take it into account.
  • Personally - I would be taking myself off to the doctor.

    For what purpose?

OP, you need to explain to the employer what steps you are taking to remedy the problem. This may include seeking medical advice, but there needs to be more - you need to pinpoint where you are going wrong and make an action plan for change. This plan is likely to require input from the employer - perhaps you need extra training, or more frequent supervision?

agree with kelly_borntoshop, go to the Dr, especially because "I am trying hard to get back to square one but am not bale to sleep with this hanging over me". Whats the worst the Dr can say? Your Dr objectives may not be the same as your employers ones.

Seen a few people snap and they have never been the same even a decade later. While not a pleasant experience, I have never seen a person yet that was made redundant have ticks and mannerisms as people that have snapped.

Currently you know things are wrong , but only with hindsight does one really know where they were. Sometime it does take help to find you way back on the path and often when in a bad situation ways back to the correct are not always visible.

Are you in a union? Does your employer subscribe to any staff welfare programmes or have an in house scheme? Are you in a particularly stressful work environment? Do you have an understanding manager willing to advise and help you? Do you need to seek counselling to help understand and cope with life? Are you with a large employer who may be willing to allocate you to a less demanding role for a while? Do you have someone to act as your advocate helping you through negotiations with your employer? Do you understand your employer's poor performance policy? You are worried about termination of employment but is this the only possible outcome if you are not considered to have shown improvement? Ascertain the facts, seek help at work and break the problem down into bite size chunks so you can plan and work your way out of trouble. Don't despair.

I am genuinely praying for you. I wish you all the best and I hope you and your wife make a speedy recovery. Everyone experiences bad times in life but don't make that get the best of you. Think positive for your family because your time will come and you will be happy.

    Am I missing something here?

You took unpaid leave but they're making you pay it back? Why do you owe them a penny if they didn't pay you?

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but think about how this looks to your employer. Rather than showing them how you are going to improve on your performance, you have gone on sick leave. I appreciate you have been through a difficult time, but you may be making things worse for yourself.

Perhaps he was paid when he shouldn't have been?

I agree with Cockaleekee. Going off sick w
ill look like a cop out and will likely accelerate any dismissal.
