gawd Ivyleaf, that was strange reading that - I've got ME as well and thats exactly my problem- lots of days I stay flat on the couch all day & he just helps himself to anything easy. Thats why I'm fussing, because I thought this would mean a lot of hassle re cooking special dietsetc. But it doesnt look like that so far.
Nelly, we don't know his reading, it was just the receptionist who phoned and told him,. then said make an appt to come and see the nurse & doctor.

He can drink diet drinks and squash with no added sugar. He can't drink any fruit juice (other than in tiny amounts - really best avoided all together) - it is full of natural sugar. A litre of orange juice has 105g of sugar in it. It's a good idea to drink lots of water. He needs to get a blood glucose monitor NOW and start testing several times a day. This way he can find which foods to avoid ( this varies from person to person) and start gaining control over his sugar levels.
Start reading food labels and avoid stuff with a high carb content.
Your husband drinking lots of orange juice will probably have given him a sky high blood glucose reading. However, this would only happen in a diabetic - a non diabetic would quickly get enough insulin into their blood to counteract the sugar.

Ooh, that sounds a bit drastic :D My DH is lucky as he's quite happy to drink plain water, and I've even got him onto tap water now whereas he used to buy bottled as he "didn't like the taste" of our (London) water :rolleyes:I'm sure your OH could have weak squash occasionally.

We're finding it easier to eat easily and healthily at this time of year, as salads are simple to put together, and he can even manage that himself with salad leaves from a bag (dearer to buy, but then none gets wasted) and pots of stuff from the salad bar in Mr S. and cooked meats.

ETA - Sorry bunny, i cross-posted with you, I meant what mardatha said - "It might be kinder...." sounded a bit drastic!

OH has had diet controlled diabetes for 6 months - just gone onto tablets and has been told he has (hereditary they think - he's adopted) high cholestrol - now THAT's a food nightmare

Not necessarily - a "healthy" diet that is suitable for diabetics will not be an issue for cholesterol, and high cholesterol is often associated with type-2 diabetes anyway. When I was prescribed Metformin for my diabetes, I was also prescribed Simvostatin to lower my cholesterol, even though it was only marginally high

My OH has had 3 heart attacks, has kidney probs, and is on tons of pills for cholestrol and gawd knows what . We don't find the cholestrol to be such a hassle, the pills take care of it :D
Ivy, I'll give it a week and if he doesn't improve then I might have to call the vee ee tea :D

It's not all bad news, it is an illness where the patient can take control. and monitor progress. Also alcohol helps lower blood sugar levels (there is a God after all). A few glasses of red wine are actually healthy for diabetics.

I pray my OH doesn't read this! It's taken me forever to get him to cut down!

And I don't want my OH to be on any more pills so I'm struggling to get him to 'manage' both but he won't  He already takes many pills for acid reflux (his valve doesn't shut) and IBS and the whole thing scares me - we're supposed to be getting married next year.
