Is this right - am I stealing? I don't want to do that. Virgin have been told that the subscription has ended but for some reason they still provide the basic channels. So is this stealing? Or are Virgin not bothered - after all, I might get tempted to get a virgin subscription, so surely its to their advantage?

i would say its not theft as the channels are free channels, would be a different story if you were getting non free channels.

It's their decision to leave the equipment in your premises and watching free channels without paying cannot be considered as theft.

Well your using they're network and equipment owned by them to gain a tv service without paying.

Explain to me how that isn't theft?

because they are getting the channels that are broadcast for free. perhaps you would like to expalin why it is theft.
plus if that was the case then ntl would still bill people AFTER they were cut off as when you get cut off for non payment etc etc you still get the free channels

I'm not entirely sure of the details on this one as it was quite a while ago when I last read it - so excuse me if it’s no longer the case.

Bottom line is that if a cable company lays cables to a private house, they are obliged to supply the basic 5 channels on that network at a frequency that can be picked up without any other equipment & are not allowed to charge merely for the cable feed
The OP is using the cable companies STB here to facilitate this but I really don't see what they are doing wrong here - I'm sure Virgin are happy about it & deliberately left the kit on site in an attempt to incite a subscription from the new householder
