Security System "restrictive practice"?
Options
Hi,
Just bought a security marking/ transponder kit. The company make various ones for car/4x4/jetski etc. I was looking for one for a motorbike, their Motorbike kit is about £80. I saw a new ATV (quadbike) kit made by the same manufacturer on ebay (sold by a 3rd party). After looking on the manufacturers website I could see that the two kits were nearly the same, just some different security stickers so I ordered one.
It arrived the next day and I set about looking how to affix the parts. One bit was confusing(it was a simple mistake by me) so I phoned the company for advice. They asked what I was fitting the quadbike kit to, and when I said a motorbike they told me that they couldn't register it on their security database due to the different vehicle class. When I pointed out that the two kits are near identical apart from some stickers, and that I could find no indication of this restrictive policy on their website, they just said I needed to buy a Motorbike kit in order to register it with them.
This doesn't feel right, but as they are all the company's products, can they sell nearly identical kits (apart from some security stickers, the rest of the components are the same) but then refuse to register it if it comes in a box with a different picture on it?
I'm not planning a court case or anything, but would appreciate some clarity on this point of law.

Pretend it's a quad. Although that maybe a problem if they ask for the registration.
Doesnt matter what the policy is on their website, You didnt buy it from their website.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Registration includes vehicle make, model, No. Plate, VIN and engine number, as its for an insurance discount.
I'd just like to know if a company can restrict use of its product types in this way without making it clear before buying.0 -
They can do what they want its their product and service.
From your orginal post it sounded like they do make it clear before buying, The issue you have is that you didnt buy it from them.
You have bought a quad bike kit and dont have a quadbike to fit it onto.
If its linked to insurance discounts then there maybe a reason for it.
I can make a product and sell it on the condition its only to be used on Monday's.
You think whats to stop me using it on the other days. But it from someone else then
moan to me because it does work on a Tuesday.
Unless the seller you bought it from mis-sold it then i cannot see what you can do other than sell it and buy the correct one.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Unfortunately I cant post direct links, I'll have to increase my two post per year average.
The company is Datatag with a uk ending website. Under "Consumer" products you can choose the different types of product.
I can understand there being a difference between one for antiques, and one for a jetski, but I cant see any real difference between the Motorbike and ATV. There was also no mention of the fact that if you fit your kit to a different shape vehicle they will not honour the registration.0
