Iphone will connect to internet when out & about with or without 3G

I don't know if this should be on the mobile thread or on the techie stuff thread.

However both my hubby & I have iphones, both 4S, and the settings are the same on both of them but when we are out and about he can get online with or without 3G and I cannot get online with 3G or without. My mobile will still alert me to when a new email has been received. Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with my mobile, please do not say it has developed an unrepairable fault.

Just a question really are you both on the same Network provider ? and if so swap sims when out together and see if the problem goes with the sim...I have an HTC so I can't help more but at least it is a bit of troubleshooting

Yes we are. I have reset the settings so I will see tomorrow when I am out and about if it makes any difference. Thanks!

That's really strange if both of you are on the same network. When 3G is unavailable, iPhone will revert to using EDGE (which is 2G and painfully slow). The symbol "E" at the top of your phone signifies that you are using EDGE.

You don't need to go out and about to check whether EDGE works on your phone. Go to settings<General<Mobile Data<Enable 3G. If you turn off 3G from there, your phone should be using 2G. Now check whether internet works and how many signal bars are you receiving.
