Can I drive another car if I have comprehensive insurance with the AA?

Hi

I need to drive another car for one day. I was wondering whether I would be able to drive it for a day under my current insurance (AA comprehensive insurance) or if I need to purchase another insurance for it. The car is registered to my name if that makes any difference.

Thanks :)

very unlikely. every policy i have ever had specifically stats that the policy holder may drive any car NOT owned by the policy holder under the driving other vehicles entitlement.

Probably best to phone the AA and explain the situation and see if they will cover it temporarily

Look at your Insurance certificate, everything inside the box drawn is what you are covered for for purposes of the RTA.
Everything outside, such as schedules is extra policy add ons.

Phone them up to confirm. Having fully comp does not always mean you are covered to drive any other vehicle.

Depends on the terms and conditions which you need to check for yourself - but few if any policies will cover you to drive another vehicle that you own yourself. Otherwise you could get a one litre Clio and a sports car and only have to insure the Clio...

Short term insurance is usually not ludicrously expensive if you only need it for a day or so. Google "Day Insurance".

The policy may state does not include cars that you own. If its registered to you then no.

Also my insurance now states. The other car must be insured also.

So i cannot drive your car if you dont have insurance on it.

Add it to your policy for a day? £20 or so?? But beware is this is in addition to your car or instead of.
I had an everyday car and a car for the holidays and towing duties. One company said no problem insuring the car for the day, But the other car wont bve insured at the same time.

No problem as one would be locked away at the time. But in your case that maybe an issue.
Has to be parked off the road on private land.

Many thanks for the replies. I'll contact the insurance company to find out how much it will be.

Definitely try your own insurers. I ran two cars in tandem doing this a while back and it only cost me something like £17 per week (can't remember exact amount), which wasn't terrible.

OP - the above is very important.

Even if you are covered it will only be 3rd party, so should you have a fault accident you will be fully responsible for all the repair costs to the borrowed car. Fine if it's £500 banger, but if you're borrowing a mate's brand new BMW you will be personally taking on a £20,000 liability. It's why I chose not to borrow other people's cars.

Why not ask the person who's car you are borrowing if they can add you to their inurance policy and you pay the additional costs.
