Trying to plan a 4 or 5 day budget city break for 21 y o Grandson and his girlfriend out of Manchester or Liverpool in June. Best sites to search? Any like couple done it recently and can recommend good "handy" hotel for city centre sightseeing? Any tips or pitfalls? Many thanks

hi we stayed for three nights in rome last year stayed in appartments supplied by purple home. They have a few choices in the centre of rome and also beside the vatican. We found it well priced and nicer than hotels in our price range. I think the ones in the centre offer a better location than the vatican ones. I can`t post the link but they`re reviewed on tripadvisor the owner can also arrange chauffuer pick up from airport for hasstle free transfer also resonable0

Beware of Romans offering taxi services....
Scamming taxi drivers are a big problem in rome0 -
Yes we were concerned about being ripped off by taxis so the chauffeur car for I think 40-50euro was good value. Also driver was waiting at arrivals saving me faffing about finding a taxi0

We stayed at Hotel Saturnia near the main station. it was basic but clean and friendly with good breakfast. Could walk to most main sites from there, or get a bus to the station as a useful landmark. Flew Ryanair and got airport bus to station from where it was a 5 minute walk to hotel. A good thing to do is a free walking tour - there are a few, you just pay tips and they are very interesting and give good tips on places to go.0

Eating out in Rome, like most italian cities is expensive! We had an appartment near the Pantheon, which we found to be an excellent central location and it enabled you to prepare food if you wanted to and even return for a rest and warmup at lunchtime (we went for new year and it was very cold!).0

I've done 4 nights in rome this month. We flew with Monarch as they were the cheapest into FCO. From there got the Leonardo Express Train to the main station in rome (Termini). We used last minutes top secret hotels, which we worked out the hotel prior to booking and got a good value 4* close to the station. Eating out is kinda expensive, depends where you eat. Getting around is easy on the metro, or you can walk. We bought a Roma Pass for 30 Euros. This gave us three days unlimited transport (metro and bus) in central rome, and access to two sites, we did the colosseum as one of these.0

There are threads about budget hotels and budget places to eat in the Rome Forum part of Trip Advisor:

When I went a few years back we stayed about a mile away from the main station, so a bit out of the way, but it was cheap and there was a nice little restaurant on the way. The best meal I had there was Caribbean and it was cheaper than a tiny meal in the tourist area.
3 of us booked with Lastminute.com flights and hotel were £660 or so for all of us!0
