Graduate job problem

See below.
I think the OP is considering lying. But it's really not necessary.
Most graduate jobs have fixed starting salaries, there is no room for negotiation. Most graduate recruitment processes are handled by HR people who know full well the other graduate employers are after the same candidates, so sometimes they have to speed up the decision process or lose a potential new joiner.
It's a whole different ball game to getting a regular job - that tends to have more scope for tactics.
The job is with a small company, there is no HR. I will be talking to the boss directly. Also, he told he last year that when I come ask him for a job I must come with my "demands". He said "If I don't ask, I won't get". So I know there is a bit of wiggle room. TBH, I am not really worried about the salary, the job I want is completely different and offers better opportunities for my career. Far better.
If I do get the offer by the time I see him, I will accept what he offers. He will not know, if I having family issues I need to attend. He once told me, things happen in life, out of one's control.
If I told him straight that I cannot meet him next week for no apparent reason he would question why and not offer me a job at all.0 -
Tell Company Y you have another offer but would rather work for them and ask if they can decide quicker? Though this is risky as they may not be ready to make a decision yet and if forced might just say no (as there are bound to be lots of candidates available to them)0

You proceed without postponing any interviews; you accept an offer if it is made and if another offer comes along, then you decide what to do.
Any other course of action is quite frankly, stupid.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -

Why would not turning up be an option?
Much smarter to go, wait for an offer (won't necessarily be instant!) and take some time to decide. You don't have to accept an offer on the spot!
I don't agree with accepting an offer and pulling out, much better to ask for more thinking time IMHO - but accepting and later declining is still better than making up reasons to defer an interview.
Strongly recommend you ditch the idea of postponing! Good luck anyway.0 -
Thank you everyone! I have decided not to be an idiot, and just go to the chat with the boss. I will see what he says and then proceed from there. If its an offer I shall most likely accept it, and try maximise my grade rather than messing about.
I have realised I am not a kid anymore.0 -
As expected the boss offered me a job. And will send me the contract next week. considerably less than the job i had an interview for. Hopefully the other company get back to me with an offer soon, or I will have to accept what the company I worked for offered me.0

Congratulations! At least you've got a job to start with.sharp910sh wrote: »As expected the boss offered me a job. If you get another offer by other company, cross that bridge then.0 -

Well done. :beer:0 -

Quick question. If I were to sign the contract for the job, then later get another interview before I start work, and got an offer and turned down the first job I signed for, how bad is that? Would I expect a good reference from the company I have turned down even before I started working.
Am I free to do that? I have applied for many places and expect to hear from them in the near future.0
