Robust beds

  • I would recommend The Reinforced Bed Company.

They supply a base that is solely designed for people with special needs. The heavy duty divan base is made from solid MDF, so is robust and sturdy enough to cope with the girls needs.

They also supply a range of wrought iron beds that have been tested on weights of up to a tonne. They use high grade mild steel and thick wooden slats to obtain this strength. The beds are durable whilst being pretty pleasing to the eye. Also the mattresses are designed for people that are overweight or obese so should be heavy duty enough also.

Your second suggestion was repair number 1, and your first, repair number 2. I am stunned that she's managed to break through again!

I will have a browse for metal framed beds now.

    Thanks

Plywood? I speak from personal experience when i confirm that 3 sheets of 1inch thick mdf (cut to size by the local timber yard) does the job lovely.

Bed has lasted 12 months so far which was previously unheard of!:o

Some charities help with funding towards beds etc for children with a disability.
The tough furniture site mentioned earlier provides furniture for a respite care centre locally, it is very good quality.

    Oh,and yes,curved slats are stronger!Much stronger.

I made the mistake a couple of years back of buying ds a £500 solid pine bed with flat slats...i'm not sure what the hell i was thinking as it didn't last long.Wooden (solid) beds seem to break easier aswell with the slats screwing in and the full wooden frame ending up splintered and damaged

Definitely - curved ones will be hugely stronger (simple physics!) but like everything its a certain amount of what you pay for

Consider some MDF aswell - its very strong if you get teh thicker stuff. Drill soem holes for ventialation

Cheap softwood slats will always have a much lower limit than a decent piece of hardwood or slow grown soft wood (but not cheap)

Forget metal beds they are useless and a divan is only a wooden upholstered frame, so again unless you pay a lot you won't have a very strong one

A decent mattress may help funny enough as it will take more of teh "shock" away from the bed slats

    Now dont laugh....

My DS (now 20) went through beds like they were going out of fashion. He broke 3 divans in 6 months. It was exasperating but I found an incredibly cheap solution which he loved.....an invalid bed.

It started as a joke actually, but having seen these beds I promise they are indestructible. I bought his from eBay where it seems there are dozens and almost all are like new and under £50. I actually paid £22 delivered for DS's 6 month old automatic bed which even came with a massage function.

(this one sold for just £28! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Adjustable-Bed-with-Mattress-/140921932827?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Mobility_Disability_Medical_ET&hash=item20cf9a0c1b&nma=true&si=0kbP%252BoXkfLy%252Fg9sxAoGqrxvHCK8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)

It took 2 of us to lug it up the stairs but as soon as it was in he loved it. He'd sit in bed with the back raised playing on his PS3 like a bloody king. It lasted for about 5 years and was still as good as new when we took it down the tip and the only reason it went then is because his GF insisted he put a double in his room hehe

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, I don't think I've ever come across such a cheap, sturdy bed as these.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Try this bed.

Fantastic value for money and really really sturdy. We bought 2 for when my step daughters stay as was fed up with the breaking divans and wooden beds.

We are even considering getting 2 for ourselves and making them into a king or superking size bed as the current divan we have is starting to creak and groan, even though it is only 5 years old.

On the mattress topic,ds now has a thick foam one.Not only does he sleep better on it (woohoo)) but it gives more support and less bounce.Less bounce is good lol

Oh and I are bith obese, we now have a single bed each, curved slats reinforced with furniture makers webbing woven through from one end to the other and screwd in.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Contract beds are MUCH stronger then domestic that's for sure. Used in youth hostels, hotels etc... As they have to be stronger as we all treat them like crap.

Who doesn't dive onto the bed as soon as they get into the hotel room!!!
