Portfolio % and individual shares

Sorry to bother you all.
I am aware of rebalancing your portfolios to whatever your prefered % are which i can see is relatively "easy" to do for funds. However reading alot on this forum, some of the more advanced users buy and sell individual shares aswell for dividends, profits etc.
When you buy these shares do you take into account your overall portfolio to the letter or do you consider seperate shares almost as a seperate pot that you play with? (aware that those shares will be covered in other funds to alot smaller percentage)
Still learning so grateful for any comments.
Thanks
