Computer - 4 attempts at repair

My Father bought a PC in January 2012 from an on-line retailer. He's had nothing but problems with it. It has been back for repairs/things swapping out a total of 4 times. Every time it goes back, they keep it between 2-4 weeks.

In September 2012, we complained and got a warranty extension, so the PC is effectively still in warranty.

The PC has failed again - so they are asking for it back to repair.

I'd like to know what my options are. I'm prepared to let them have one final go at fixing this, but if it breaks again, I'd like to have it repaired elsewhere and invoice them - is this an option?

Who is the PC manufacturer and who is dealing with the repairs?
  • Thanks for replies.

I'd rather not name the company yet.

The faults have always been the same - monitor goes blank and the keyboard locks up - you know this because the CAPS & NUM lights don't respond to key press. The PC has to be rebooted to come back online.

The OS has been reinstalled more than once. It's a hardware issue - I'm certain, but I suspect all they are doing is re-seating parts and re-installing the OS. There is something wrong with either M/B, CPU, Memory or graphics.

Let us know if you're dealing with the manufacturer, as per the warranty, or dealing directly with the retailer, in which case you could exercise your statutory consumer rights. The reason I asked who this is, was to ascertain if the retailer and manufacturer were one and the same, for example Dell.
  • The company sells PCs (their own branded product) and components. It's not Dell.

Their PCs are built with parts you can purchase yourself, e.g. Gigabyte motherboard, ASUS graphics card, etc. It's wasn't a custom built PC, it was just one of their off-the-shelf PCs - although it is a very good spec, even by today's standards.

Sounds like a hardware issue deffo based on what you have said.

Can you find out what they have actually done each time? I would have thought they would keep a record of each repair.

It could be hardware, could be overheating, could be a driver issue.

How long does the PC work for before it has to be sent for repair again?

Does the fault occur at the same time, for example when playing games?

It might be worth you trying to update the driver just to rule that out. And also try cleaning dust from the PC with a can of compressed air.
