Door hung wrong way - my rights?

  • If he had the proof you would have seen it by now 7 days have passed .

These are my thoughts also. I went away for a couple of weeks two days after the door fitting so I'd told him we would discuss it when I got back. I got back last Monday and the bill arrived on Tuesday with no mention of the problem and no phonecall. There had also been a problem with the incorrect door handle being put on and I asked him not to change it in view of the ongoing issues but I came back from hols to find that had been done despite this request.

Head in the sand I feel on his part.

  • you need to speak with him and tell him you want the door hanging the way it was i presumed the problem was from the day you posted .he definately has no proof you have altered the handing of door
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction
  • I'll give him until Wednesday to make contact and then I'll chase him up. Can't understand why he hasn't been in contact now he knows I'm not paying until it is sorted.

Hey ho, we'll get there in the end.

our order forms clearly state all viewed from OUTSIDE to avoid such confusion directly above where the customer signs

Then all should be well , but explains why there are so many "mis-measures" on ebay, it relies totally on the seller pointing it out or the buyer being able to read the small print.
Gord knows what happened in this case but it went wrong, just maybe an additional elevation would have helped.

Sorry you window guys but I'm ex engineering, we detail every thing in 1st or 3rd angle projection, no qualifiers needed about where you are viewing from;);)

Planning a 3 window bay for a relative at present, try detailing that without a plan view:D:D
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • A quick update.

I haven't heard anything from the builder. The bill for the door was included on a larger bill for a few other jobs done at the same time so I took off the door amount and paid the rest with a note saying to get in contact to discuss said door. This was last Sunday and the money left my account on Wednesday but no contact in relation to the non payment and rectifying the situation.

I will now be putting it in writing that if I don't hear from him by a specified date I will assume he considers the matter closed and that I won't be paying him. This suits me as I can then go and order a replacement and make sure everything is correct myself!

I will of course be putting in the letter that I will inform him of the date that the new door will be fitted should he wish to collect the current structure as it is still his property with me not having paid for it.

  • A further update if anyone is still interested :p

I happened to bump into the builder last week and after some too-ing and fro-ing he has now agreed to replace the door at his expense. I had insisted on seeing the proof of discussion and as he obviously didn't have any he has backed down. He hasn't admitted his mistake but taking this course of action means he takes responsibility.

2-3 weeks for the new order to come through although they are recycling some parts of it to make it cheaper for them. This concerns me slightly as I hope it doesn't look like a bodge job but I suppose I put my trust in them and hope for the best.

One part they are recycling is some of the door, does this make sense? The reason I know this is that I said I didn't want a knocker on the new door and they said they are reusing the front panel.

Thanks for all your help guys, I'm pleased I can finally report this solution :T

Yes, there are quite a few components that can be reused with no problems whatsoever. Glass panes for example. However, I'd check the work very very carefully before paying the final bill. Get a friend to check too... amazing what a friend spots that you miss in the heat of the problem. Avoid the attitude of "well, at least it is better than it was; I'll just accept it for a quiet life..." as you may regret it in the longer term. You can't exactly ignore a front door!

Take lots of pictures of the old door and frame before it is changed, showing the {male chicken*} - up just in case... if it all goes wrong another time, you may want to have proof to back up losing faith in his work, and having someone else complete the job.

Here's hoping it works this time round!

    * to avoid filter :D
  • Thanks DaftyDuck for all your helpful pointers. Definitely a good idea to get someone else to check, I didn't even notice it had been hung the wrong way until they'd left
