Bah, just typed a reply but it didnt work.
I think the first thing to do is decide what format you want to use, either DVD, miniDV, or hard drive. They all have their pros/cons. Have a read here. Personally I like miniDV, as it has long recording times and is very good quality.
I saw Empire Direct are selling a Samsung DVD camera for £199, which is much cheaper than they used to be. I dont know anything about it though.

I got myself a Canon MV960 from Amazon a few months ago and am very pleased with it.
Just point and shoot in easy mode, its set up for 16*9 recording has a nice wide screen display 25* optical zoom, miniDV and SD card for stills.
AV input (for converting old analog movies) and DV in and out. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
There is a Canon outlet on EBay, selling all sorts of official recon products, with full warranty, etc. I bought a photo printer from there, good as new, in fact I'm sure it is new. there's always a selection of video cameras, including MV960, and various others. The prices seem very good, but of course it's best to check high street offers as well, as a comparison. Worth a look though, if you can get a higher spec for the same dosh.0
