hi all
had timing belt done on my car last year, when i had it done they explained something didnt go correctly & loaned me courtesy car until done.
when i collected car they said belt jumped a tooth & they had to re-do it.
its been 20k miles since change.
now my car is hard to start & heavy on fuel.
car is vw golf mk5 2.0 diesel.
i have joined a few vw forums who if i describe my problem all say timing belt was done wrong.
what can i do !!!!!!!!

Take it back and tell them ever since they did the work you have
    had issues starting it.

Although really you should have taken it back the next day.

How long ago was the work done?

  • been 12 month now but if they messed up first time they could make things worse
  • So you've driven 20K miles since the belt was changed???
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • yes been 20k miles since change, i am only now learning what has been wrong
  • Did you notice anything different in your car running after the timing belt change during that period . Or , has this problem just occurred very quickly recently ? I would suggest . Take it , to another garage if you don't trust the previous one . And ask them do a diagnostic check on you car . And see what they find , maybe timing belt , or something else . Anyway , get your car checked .
  • to be honest mpg seemed same but was harder too start just never put 2 & 2 together at the time.
but been reading lately on net why vw diesel hard start & poor mpg all suggest this is after timing belt change

If fitted correctly the belt cannot jump a tooth, if it was fitted a tooth out and the engine turned over may have bent a valve, which would affect the performance and fuel consumption, still a year later is a bit late to take it back,or maybe it the valve timing is out and has not damaged a valve but is causing the car to run badly
  • i realise a year is a long time to return but if it has been fitted wrong its a expensive job to correct should they not be liable

How would your prove they are liable after 12 months and 20,000 miles?

Anyone could have been under the bonnet in that time.
