mouse gone mad

Options
Hi, can anyone help, my mouse went mad, everytime I tried to use it it would just move to the other side of the screen and then control panel and outlook open on there own, it also opens the windows selector loads of times, I have just been and brought a new mouse and thats doing the same. so I unistalled the mouse and restarted, it said no mouse detected, so I put the new mouse in and it is doing the same thing again. is there any virus around that could cause this? I've done a full system scan with norton but nothing was detected I have also ran spywaredoctor but nothing there either, thanks

Have a look at Internet Security - Free! Viruses! which is under FAQ's and is a sticky at the top of this board.

There are links there to Ewido, AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, you could try them.

Shift with Left Alt and Numlock will activate a mouse key dialog box (w2K andXP) . With a bit of phaffing around with tab space bar and arrow keys you can get the numeric keypad to be a passable mouse. Be careful as you can also disable this key sequence in the presented options.
What type of mouse interface do you have ? If it is usb have you tried another socket ? Is there any thing new that might have been a trigger for this behaviour.

  • joe_bloggs ,its a sp2,on win dows xp, no new hardware has been added, but I do have my num lock on, thanks
  • If you have a nice new optical mouse with a slim mouse pad, with a picture printed on it perhaps, the surface of the mouse pad causes multiple reflections which send the mouse crazy.

Try turning the mouse pad over or putting a piece of paper on top of it and see if that fixes your problem.

Sadly, I feel this may not be the answer as I have read of similar problems on other forums. If you want further info on the boards give us a shout and I will post a link.
