How much should i charge for board and lodge

My daughter and her boyfriend are going to be living with me once my house purchase goes through, what is going to be a fair split of the bills. Would it be a three way split or should we go halves, not sure what the etiquette is and there's no way i can support them on my salary.

  • Split between 3, that way it will get them used to both saying their share when it comes to them moving in by themselves.

Three way split of bills + rent + an amount for food. You shouldn't be out of pocket in any way and possibly even better off.

a 3-way split would be the correct way I think.

Agree. Bills split three ways + rent. Keeps it nice and simple. Food is tricky, I'd say leave them to buy their own food. You just buy yours. That keeps it nice and clean too.

I think with council tax they should pay between them 25% as you'd be paying 75% otherwise.

In terms of other bills, I'd take money for the extra (ie. extra water, gas and electricity) that they incur over and above what you normally pay but I assume there will be fixed bills that you'd be paying regardless of whether they were there or not (ie. internet, any paid TV), I wouldn't charge them for those. I would take money for rent (commensurate with sort of what they could expect to pay on the open market for a house share) but I would let them buy their own food.

Depends how you get on. In fear of being shot down sharing all means they could take things literally and your house may not be yours. I would charge a rent which would cover gas electric useage a portion of the council tax you then need to think about things like using phone and paying fair who is buying food and household needs I.e toilet rolls or cleaning stuff and even more important who us cooking and clearing up after..

Think about are they going to be helping around the house like properly cleaning the bathroom after use or are you going to have to re clean before you can sink not that much needed far work haven in your new house?

Are they going to clean the cooker if they are doing their own cooking

If you want some privacy will you have to go to your bedroom or are they going ? After a while things grate so really think through daily events and how they might change with not just your daughter but her boyfriend there.

If you are doing the shopping and cooking you may get very frustrated that they tell you at half four in the afternoon when you have prepared dinner that they are now not coming in.

Think about washing machine use and drying space

Sorry been there done it before and it's not as rosy as you think it will be.

    Good luck.

Oh and TV in the main room will you be able to watch what you want or will your hard drive be filled up with youngsters rubbish so your programmes won't record.

Internet will they sit in the lounge with laptops on or on their mobiles so our tv viewing or music listening or quiet reading time is interrupted every few minutes with clicks and noises and the pair of them mumbling and sharing making you feel like a spare part.

But if, as many others are suggesting, they all split the bills evenly, the house shouldn't be treated as the OP's but instead should be treated as a house share, so nobody gets priority over the TV or the lounge. If I was paying an even split of the costs, I'd expect to have an equal claim over the kitchen/TV/lounge unless someone was there first or had spoken to me in advance.
  • Hi thanks for all your replies, they've been very helpful.

I was thinking of a three way split myself with the bills etc but wasn't sure it that was right, so that part is sorted.

The way the house is configured we will be able to have private space/time so that's not a problem

Food i was going to buy the basics and leave them to buy and cook their own anyway.

Cleaning etc will lay ground rules for that.

As I said just needed to air those points as its too late when you are all on top of each other and the kids still treat it like a hotel!
