Hotmail to Outlook?

Options
I use a couple of Hotmail addresses regularly and I am confused about the transformation to Outlook.

I don't think there is anything I have to do (is that right) I currently access my hotmail.com address at https://www.hotmail.com but in future it will be at https://www.outlook.com, yes it looks slightly different but it is essentially the same.

Am I missing something?

  • Its essentially an interface and usability change. Outlook.com actually divert to a live URL when you login. May change in the future but for you the only difference is the interface really. Microsoft may eventually turn off hotmail.com but for now at least you will just be redirected after login.

Perhaps worth mentioning that (as I understand it) your actual email address won't change by default. So if you are xyz@hotmail.com, you stay like that, and won't be changed to xyz@outlook.com.

As xyz@hotmail.com, xyz@msn.com, xyz@live.com could all be different people (and I think all moving to the Outlook website), Microsoft can't reserve xyz@outlook.com for all of them at once, so I think they're not reserving outlook.com email addresses for any of them.

The upshot is... if you're xyz@hotmail.com and want to be xyz@outlook.com, get in there quick before someone else does! As long as no-one has got there first, you can set up an alias so you have both addresses without having to stop using the old one.
  • One of my hotmail accounts has moved over (permanently) to outlook.

The only real problem I have, is that when using Firefox, it does not auto-refresh (i.e. show me new mail in my inbox). This was never a problem with hotmail.

As an aside, I went to optionally change to Outlook today ahead of the compulsory change over date, and the link said something like "sorry, you can not change at this time".

Must be lots of people trying to change over at once before it does it automatically?
