Claim back for holiday

Hi please can someone advise me as to the best way to claim back my holiday on my credit card.
I purchased our first ever family holiday with Thomas Cook on my credit card, not expecting any issues.
I arrived at the airport and booked in, but as I did this I received a call from my brother my grandmother has just passed away. There was no way we could go on holiday. I got my bags back and advised Thomas cook.
I now discover I was not insured, can I claim back via the credit card company and if so on what grounds do I ask for a refund?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Condolences for your loss but I do not believe that you can claim this back unfortunately.0

Not insured! Did they tell you you were buying insurance with the holiday (normally a separate cost) and there is a difference between Holiday Insurance and Cancellation Insurance.
As for can you claim it back from you CC company, no as no one has defaulted on providing you the service you purchased.
(When we were unable to travel, none package due to the Icelandic Volcano the only money we got back was the airline as we had booked this separately to the Hotels and as they could not fly us we were refunded. The Hotel would not refund as it was us that were saying we could not use them as we could not fly. We asked the CC company if we could claim back as we paid by card and was told that it did not cover us cancelling. In the end we got most of our money back through the insurance even though it was classed as an act of nature - not covered).
Unless Thomas Cook told you insurance was included (usually a separate cost) then you should have asked about travel Insurance and Cancellation insurance.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
Did you think you were insured.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
No you cannot claim it back....the tour operator has done nothing wrong.
You should have taken insurance to cover that kind of situation.0 -
A credit card claim can only be made on a spend of >£100 where the retailer fails to deliver the product or service.
If you arrived at the Airport to find Thomas Cook had just gone in to liquidation and the flights you were booked on didn't operate then you could claim back your spend.
In this instance Thomas Cook provided the holiday you paid for but you chose not to accept it for personal reasons.0 -
Some credit cards used to offer a free travel insurance for travels paid by the card. Highly unlikely, I know, but is worth checking.
Having said that, all travel agents offer you to buy a travel insurance through them. If you refused, it would be reasonable to make alternative arrangements if you don't have any 'free' one from a bank.0 -
If your grandmother had a 'condition' when you (might) have taken the insurance out, you probably wouldnt have been covered anyway.
Things like this are in the t&cs.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I don't think that is necessarily the case. If you tried to insure someone with a condition then it probably wouldn't be covered but holiday abandonment due to a relative dying is usually covered unless you've got some cheap economy insurance. It's the people going on the trip that need to be clear of medical conditions not relatives who might die and cause you to abandon your trip.0 -

You usually have to declare any known conditions in your family eg. the insurance would not pay if your Dad had cancer and you had not declared it
. The grey area comes when your family member has the condition but perhaps has chosen not to tell you. Not sure what would happen then.0 -
