Email Problem!!!

I was with Talk Talk when Firefox crashed and I could not browse.
Talk Talk told me to adjust settings and mentioned a Proxy Server(did not understand but followed instructions)
Firefox was now working but Outlook Express which I have used for 10 years did not allow me to open links within the Emails.
As Talk Talk have always been unsatisfactory I rang Plusnet and explained the problem.
The Salesperson said they would correct as they could have access to my Computer if necessary.
I have a new Email Address through Outlook Express as I do not want to lose my Folders or Address Book but the problem persists.
Is there anything I can do?
Thank you.

If they've given you proxy server settings, I'd remove them.
I'm with Plusnet and never used a proxy server (as far as I know).:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
Sounds like lots of changes and new stuff. To be honest, I'm not to sure what you want.
Always make backup first.
For starters, if you want to keep your old email name then that is between you and your isp. if you do not want your old email address to vanish, now you have a new one, then that is also with your isp.
Although i have not used Outlook Express for many years, but I am fairly certain modifying your email details will not cause you to loose existing mail or contacts.
To diagnose where the problem lies (outlook or sever), I would try this first and you should be interested in both pop3 and smtp. I would err that the problem would likely be OE.

I liked OE but at the time found it too problematic and could not handle large attachments.
Personally, I would make the move to gmail. I would even move to gmail even if you get your email working. However if you can't, Thunderbird was a very stable replacement and I would import my outlook mails and contacts into that.0 -

How do I back upFolders in Outlook Express?
I would be happy to change but do not want to lose the info in my folders.
As you can see, I am not very technical!0 -
back your whole entire machine regularly. Especially important if you are not very technical.
to backup OE data, here are most complete is the first one, and the least complete the last one.

To be honest, it would probably be best if you contact plusnet or talk-talk as they know what has been changed and how to remedy your problem.
would not hurt if you backup you stuff first. If you are not technical, or do not want the trouble with email maintenance, or lazy and want reliability, the gmail is a good way to go. Plus gmail works everywhere, independent of your isp, so when you leave the isp you will not loose your mail account. Gmail is free too.0 -
I could be wrong (and perhaps someone can correct me) but my understanding is that Firefox uses its own connection (including proxy) settings within the application while Outlook Express uses the connection settings in Control Panel->Internet Options, which are shared with Internet Explorer.
Does Internet Explorer connect? If not, the proxy settings from Firefox need to be copied to Internet Options - TalkTalk may be able to help if that is the case.0 -
Talk Talk changed Proxy Server settings. How do I remove them.

Since you are struggling with relatively simple things like email set- up, why don't you just do a System Restore back to a date prior to when TT installed the Proxy Server?
Not the quickest method, but probably the most painless for you.

Sounds to me that you have correctly diagnosed the problem as it happened straight after my Talk Talk advisor changed the settings!0 -

I was an experienced Commercial Insurance Technician but when anything needed to be adjusted on my Computer it was carried out by the Help Desk miles away!
If everyone knew as much as you do about IT there would be no need for a Forum.
However I have always been grateful for all the help I have received!!!!
Thank you Macman.0
