Most animals don't like anything citrus-smelling so something like lemon thyme would probably deter both cats and dogs.

    thanks you two.

    following research i have......

1.rubbed vicks (or in my case, cheaper brand!) vapour rub into terracotta pots. this seems to be working!

2.ordered some "coleus canina" otherwisw called "dog-be-gone" plants. will report back at a later date

3.sown some marigold seeds.will report back eventually

4.fenced off the flower bed with chicken wire and canes.looks awful, but will give my tortured plants a chance to resurrect and hopefully i can then remove it.

will give some thought to the citrus basd plants too.have decided i don't mind my gorgeous JRT digging the lawn, he has to have some fun!
