Personally I wouldnt upload work to a website.

CutePDF is good, it appears as a printer, so you just print your document and select the PDF program as the printer. It outputs the result into a pdf document.

Open Office - open any word document - or create documents in it and use the export to pdf option.

I use cutePDF writer, better than PDF995 as it doesn't popup a website after you use it

There's a free PDF converter called PDFCreator. Free and easy to use. Just install it and it works like a printer driver - you're in your Word doc, you go to 'print', then select 'PDFCreator' from the drop-down menu.
