I have a Facebook username, but I have very strong reasons for not wanting to be identified , for my personal safety.
I have three family members that I would like to be able to have some online contact with,I also have regular phone and personal contact with, but, I have never used fb and don't know how to use it or what use it would be to me, or if I can use it without others reading my messages as they maybe able to search my family members out? Am I worrying unduly, what should I do?

I avoid Facebook like the plague. Nothing you put on there is private. If it is now (because you chose to adjust your settings), then there's no guarantee it will be later.
They change policy terms without your knowing, they buy & sell other companies at the drop of a hat.
It's too big to be controllable, and they're so big, they're the targets of hackers.0 -

Facebook is best avoided in your case. Even if you go private when someone who is unconnected to you posts to a mutual friend's page you will be able to see it.
I have been shocked at some of the stuff that people who are not on my friend's list have revealed unknowingly. Facebook is a law unto itself with regard to privacy."Some folks are wise and some are otherwise." - Tobias Smollett0
