Being paid whilst on mandatory training course?

I have to attend a training course for my part time job. I am happy to do this. However, the available course is on a Saturday, for 6 1/2 hours, and I have been told that I will not get paid for this.
Is this allowed? As it's grating a bit that I have to give up a Saturday to do a training course for a job that I do for 3.5 hours a week, term time only, and not even get paid!
I haven't had a contract yet, have been in post for 8 weeks, so can't check that.
I have Googled but can't find anything relevant. Can anyone point me in the right direction if there is any information I should know?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe call ACAS. I know we get paid or time owing. To be honest I would not go to any training day on my day off without pay or time owing. I have been with my workplace 20 odd years though and you've been only 8 weeks.
If I was you I would properly go but that's on the basis of you only been there 8 weeks. Can you claim travel allowance. You haven't got a contract so there is no stipulation that you have to attend courses in your own time. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -
Why can't the training be provided during normal working hours?
Does attendance take you below NMW?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Thankyou silkyuk9. I will call ACAS. I don't think I can claim travel either, I will definitely go as I love the job, but I do think I should be paid!
I couldn't get time owing either as we claim on an "as worked" basis, so would still have to put in a claim to get paid - two out of the three of us work each day on a rota basis.0 -

Its a bloody cheek honestly and you have to pay for travel costs, again I would take a pool car or claim travel expenditure. Some bosses expect everything, but talk to ACASAll the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -
The course is only 6 miles away so that bit isn't too bad, it's just having to give up my saturday for free! And like you say, it seems cheeky for them to expect it when they insist I do the training

Once had a broadly similar request. After I raised the matter of insurance if I had an accident, hey presto I was suddenly in works time and could take the time off in lieu.
My answer would be "No pay = No go" I'm afraid. You are an employee, not a slave.

Can you give us a clue what sector/industry you work in?

sorry ohreally, missed your post!
Normal working hours are 1 hour per day, 3 days one week, four the next. I am paid £6.45 an hour (I think - paid 1 month in arrears so will be paid for the first time tomorrow!) And paid on a "claim" basis, not salaried. So yes, I think the course will take me below the NMW unless I have worked for approx 170 hours (if my maths is right ha ha)0 -
It's a school breakfast club Poppy9

Like the insurance idea Sleazy, although TOIL wouldn't work as it's not a salaried post. May be worth raising the insurance thing though

Actually that's a good point, this is the beauty of forums. I would never have thought that. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0
